I had some free time yesterday and decided to take a class sponsored through local Calumet. Among other things the guy showed us how he setups the light and he said he never ever tilts them, always keeps the softboxed, umbrellas etc horizontal. He promised to explain later why but he session was pretty intensive and the main topic was not lighting so it was omitted. What the rationale could be behind it ?

I have seen same thing. I have tried it where I keep my softbox straight and going right across the subject but slightly in front. Basically light is moving from right to left (or other way around depending on the SB position and is going perpendicular to the camera axis). Gives quite nice light.
On Monte's old forum Ed Shapiro (spelling?) had a long article where he says that he prefers small umrebllas and why he keeps them stright not angled down like most people would. See if you can search for it.
My guess would be that in trying to replicate soft window light. Windows are straight. Same thing with folks using strobe behind the diffusion panel. Strobe is straight so is the panel.
Would love to hear from experienced folks.

Hi, my thinking is you can use any lighting setup you like. It depends on what you want to achieve.
I guess Calumet guy was trying to point out that most people tend to tilt their softboxes, when they should probably keep them straight in most of the situation since it gives a better lighting in his opinion.

I just like downward lighting, which why why I have mine tilted down most of the time.
