Im selling my motorcycle and getting $4500 for it, Im thinking of upgrading and getting some new lens.

* Upgrade from D-rebel to 20d ( keep d-rebel as backup)
* Purchase 24-70 2.8L
* Purchase 17-40 4L
* Tamrac Cyberpack 6 backpack.

(already have 70-200 f4L, 50 f1.8, 550 ex, and kit lens)

Any other ideas?

What about drop the 17-40 & get the fish or the Sigma 12-24.
To me, there's too much overlap if you get the 17-40 & 24-70.

Not a bad idea, maybe i should hold off on the 17-40 and get the 16-35 later on, i was eyeing that one more anyways. Also how does the EFS 10-22 stack up?

take the 4500 and put it in an ira. Are you investing properly? you dont want to be an old man with outdated camera equipmant and no money ;) be happy with what you have and stop spending money foolishly.

With no motorbike how are you going to get yourself to interesting places to take pictures?

Instead of the 28-70L have you considered the Tamron 28-75?

I was going to suggest that one also, as long as you have the 300D & 20D (EF-S mount), but if you decide to upgrade to the 1 Series, you won't be able to use it.

What do you shoot?
How do your current lenses limit you?

If I had 4.5 grand... I'd get the 500/4.5 sigma which CDS has on sale right now... :p

What do you shoot?

Able to use what? I don't see an EF-S lens mentioned in this thread???

How about some L glass like the 35-350 or 100-400? The former lives on my 1Ds 95% of the time. Heavy yes, versitile.....you bet.:) Short of macro shots I haven't found much of anything I can't use it for.

Forget the 24-70, see how you go with just the 17-40 or the 16-35.

I don't miss the gap between my 17-40 and 70-200 (I rarely carry the 18-55 or 28-105 lenses). For those rare occassions, I have the 50.

With no motorbike how are you going to get yourself to interesting places to take pictures? Get a film dolly base for your tripod. They have wheels!:D

Thanks for all the ideas,
upon looking at what I shoot I think i will do better with just the 20D, 24-70, and a 100 macro, and the 1.4x TC, and some accessories for all that. I think that will allow me the range i need for my distant shots, and the 24-70 is wide enough for me untill I decide to get something wider, i want to stay away from the EFS since I eventually plan to upgrade to a full frame when the come out with newer ones.

really my comment was part joke part serious, but a rollover ira should not impact your ira contirbution. LAst year i contributed to a regualr ira and had to rollover 40+ K from one of my jobs. But you sgould consider at least putting some of it away. Im sure you can get by with "only" ;) spending 3000 on new equipment.:D

I have the 10-22 and I've rented a 16-35. I like the 10-22 VERY much. It's cool to hold a camera up normally and see your toes.

I think the following would be great:
- 20D body
- 580ex flash
- 10-22mm
- 24-70mm L
- a dedicated macro lens (new EF-S 60mm?)
- a 50 F1.8 prime
- at least two bags. One for everything, one for day tips, hikes, etc...
- 250GB external USB 2.0 Harddrive for storage
- Couple of 2GB flash cards
- fast USB 2.0 CF card reader

Regards,

NW

the 24-70 2.8l is #1 on my list.
I saw a test of that lens compared to all these other lens and it was the absloute best by a landslide. im still stuck between the efs 10-22 or the 17-40 f4l.

Good plan. I splurged on the 10-22, and even though I am very satisfied with the purchase, it is a "risk" for follow-on body upgrades.

I do have the 16-35L and it is a very nice lens but I wanted to see what the lack of 6mm more (actually 9.6mm) would provide. It's pretty impressive, the lower you go, the more impact each mm change has. If you want TRUE wide angle, nothin better than the 10-22. The 10-22 is to APS-C what the 16-35 is to 35mm.

Overlap in zoom lenses, IMO, is nice and alleviates the need to swap out when your "on the edge". Thus my 16-35L; 24-70L; and soon 70-200L.

Dump the 17-40. You're better off range wise with the 10-22. Difference between 22-24 is slight. HUGE difference between 10-17.
