Make up, and of course the image is post processed. No direct blackening of eyes only, lots of contrast added of course.

Yeah, I think it's the make up that I dislike. Somehow gives a kind of "overprocessed tone mapped" feel :p

I dig the added contrast. That, combined with the makeup and Nergal's expression gives a great skull-like appearance to his face.
