Hi All,
I'm new to digital photography and here are my attempts at what I call serious attempts with amature equipment.
These are taken with an IXUS v3 (also known as s230 or elph) our first digital camera!
Should I keep practicing or not???

Thanks for your time,

Hi
Your camera is fine. A good photographer will take good photos with a Box Brownie.
A bad photographer will turn out rubbish with a $6000 camera.
Not being a member of your site I could only see the shot of the little girl.
It's a very pleasant shot and you've done a lot of things right.
Her pose is restful and pleasing. Expression is good.
Background colors are pleasing too.
The shortcomings have nothing to do with the camera.
Lighting is rather poor, so that its hard to see detail of the cat (?)
The light area top right should be darkened..... cloned out.
The girl's knee is caught at a bad angle and looks too large.
These are technical faults that would look the same even with the most expensive camera.
They are not hard to avoid. Just be very critical of the composition and light before you press the button.

Thanks Eland,
It's actually my new dog hence my not wanting to edit her out : )
The site does not require membership to enter and view, you should be able to navigate thru out the album. I hope you take the time to go back and see the rest (you have to click on the view all or index on the upper right hand corner of the frame).
As for your comments... thanks! I'll keep those in mind along with the zillion other things I need to remember when shooting, hahaha! But I knew the picture lacked light, the other comments were much appreciated! Thanks for the encouragement (not being too critical).
More please.... : )
Ciao

Tonichi,
Unfortunately very few people will go to the trouble of logging in to another site. Probably better to move your stuff to a free site like pbase or photosig, to which we can easily link. Just a suggestion...
The first photo is a very nice snapshot. Eland's suggestions are appropriate.
Cheers,

I have just tried 3 times to see your pics and failed each time.
As Mitch says, no one will bother.
Use pbase or photosig as Mitch suggests.
Lots of people on the Canon site use pbase.
My apologies for calling your dog a cat.

No one on this site is going to be nasty or insulting to you.
This is a friendly site with nice helpful people.
Just do your best and you'll receive constructive comments and praise where it's due.
Just don't hide behind the fact that you are using an inexpensive camera.
Your camera may not be able to give you big enlargements, and its lens range may be limited but it's fine and it's up to YOU and NOT the camera to take good pictures.
Frame your subject carefully, Make sure the light is suitable and adequate, and avoid stuff in the frame that will spoil the picture.
Your Ixus will tell you all of this moments after you take a shot.
Be critical when you study your work, and DON'T BLAME THE CAMERA !
With digital you can easily retake the shot
when you see the result.
And please join www.pbase.com/ so we can see yor pics easily.
You know of course that if you have your own website you can load your pictures directly to the Canon site.
Press on. You are doing fine, and you have a lot of new and caring friends.

The definition of snapshot only added to an already broad smile!
Yes, I've been working on a site at photosig,
www1.photsig.com/viewphoto.php?id=557324
but can only upload 1 shot every 3 days, so right now only the hidden sunset is posted. More will follow over time. There is also one in Geocities that has 4 of my photos although it includes my Kennel business. I've put the site address below for those interested.

Sincerely guys, thanks very much for the critque! Rest assured it was all taken constructively!
Happy New Year guy's

I liked all of your photos -- but I too did not want to run thru the sign-in procedure. I liked the shot of your daughter best. It is a great record shot. Eland's suggestions hold if you are trying to be more artistic as the knee in particular hit me the most. By the way, my mind said "cat" !
The sunset is just fine, but perhaps deserves more brightness to lift the sailboat out of the darkness a bit. But for all these images I will go out on a limb to guess that you only took one shot (that is what I was doing when I started out last year with my G2).
Shooting a full card at your sunset, as it progressed down the sky might have given you a better selection when you returned to process same in PS. Along this line, here are three progressive shots that I referenced in a reply a few months ago that illustrate the point. Of course it means that you have to stay on subject for 20 – 40 minute or so.

Thanks Howie,
Yes one shot on the sunset (only 1 16mb card). But the little girl (a niece actually) had more, but since the dog was the bribe to get her to sit on the couch, a few different poses (this girl is high energy and hard to keep still!). I'm sure you all know about subjects and poses... more like moments! Gotta be ready huh?
Wonderful suggestion and shots too, thanks again.
