Hi guys,
I asking for your expert help on metering by camera meter. I have 40D and 24-105L... It seems like every time I take picture without flash, I always got underexposed if my shutter speed is less than 1s... even aperture set at f/4.... Just wonder if there is anything wrong with my camera....
Thanks so much....

I assume you dont mean in manual mode (you set everything yourself)
Did you check to see if you have exp. compensation at zero?
R we speaking of indoor or outdoor?
indoors I typically start with the settings of 1/60, f4 - 5.6, ISO 400 (without flash) and of course try to match the color temp of the available light (i.e. tungsten etc.)
Indoor light can fool you into thinking its brighter than it really is (at least where an exposure is concerned).
outdoors the camera may expose for the background if your subject is small in the frame, in that case flash is your friend for a little fill
You were kinda vague in your description but I hope maybe something I said will work for you.

manual, av, tv?
what metering mode (spot etc.)?
what settings (shutter speed, aperture, ISO)?
do you have an example to post?

It would help a lot if you can post a picture and tell us what settings you're using (shooting mode, metering mode, etc).

Agreed, post a picture with exif info.
You are not saying which exposure setting - Av/Tv/M? Even the camera can be fooled into underexposure so the exposure compensation controls are there for a reason. White Balance has nothing to do with exposure.

White Balance has nothing to do with exposure. And AWB is very poor indoors.
This shows how the subject can affect the exposure & why manual keeps me worry free:
