Canon has got to have a replacement for this lens in the works. This lens is out of stock everywhere!

The price search engines/companies are also dropping this lens like a dirty diaper. Even Amazon has it out of stock and only has a couple posted as "used".

I noticed it was hard to find also but figured they were just holding back because of the economy. It is a pretty niche item.

I got one last week from B&H. Sorry, I must have gotten the last one.

I got mine about 8 months ago, brand new, prior to that they were hard to find in stock. My guess is, they only produce so many within a certain length of time. I was on a waiting list with B&H for about 6 weeks before they got them in stock.

It's a vast Nikon conspiracy...

Now would be a good time for them to introduce IS to the lens as I was looking at getting this one when funds allowed / saved up and IS may be icing on the cake. I would be a bit nervous shooting at 400mm @ f/5.6 in anything but bright sun

My only concern with an IS version is, knowing Canon, they'll probably price it at $1699+ (probably more though) and thus it will no longer be an affordable 400mm prime.

Yep. Look what IS did to the price of the 70-200f4. I think it's now $600 vs 1100

Worth the price premium IMHO.

Likewise. I got one (RAZOR SHARP) from B&H last week. I don't see Canon offering this lens with IS. That would eat into the other 400mm lens offerings I would think. I'm not sure what to do now though with the one I just got... It is incredible as to how sharp it is. How often do you use a 400mm in low light without a tripod? IS would, perhaps, impact IQ, and clearly price and weight.

Se my post in DPREVIEW at the time, last entry from Jay S. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1029&message=31311393

I think I'm going to pick up one of these when they get back in stock. I want it primarily for the additional focal length and want the option to use it with a 1.4x TC (no AF of course). 560mm is 560mm!

While the 100-400IS would be more flexible, it just doesn't take a TC well (from what I've read).
Also, I already have a majority of that range covered with the 70-200 F4 IS + 1.4x TC (98-280mm) which has much better IS than the 100-400.

I'll confirm my local camera rep indicated this was a special order, and his canon rep told them it's a "hard to get" lens. There are a few others on the list as well. I did not see the list, he just told me about it.

They seem to have just about turned off the faucet on these lenses!
It seems like a few drip out every couple of weeks though.

I bought mine a couple of weeks ago...had it shipped from Henry's in TO plus they price matched it as well....sweet deal!

I ordered it on a Thursday and picked it up the following Wednesday.....cha-ching! As I said they priced matched it from photoprice.ca (Aden Camera)..$ 1299 vs $1449 Henrys....but I've read your buying the 300 and TC...good choice as well....it was between these 2 I debated....but I knew I'd use a mono or tripod with it always

Interesting, I wasn't aware they put out of stock items in GB. Last I checked, it still said it ship dates were 2-4 weeks out.

I KNOW!

Maybe they're trying to get people to shoot with the equipment they already have, rather than just accumulating meaningless arrays of equipment !

Nothing to be nervous about. I usually use mine on a monopod, and with the battery grip it's all the better for portrait oriented shots. I've gotten sharp ones down to 1/60sec.
