Man, I did it again. I got another lens! LOL Really looking for a good candid/portait for th ekids that could grow into an indoor shooter in low light as they get older and participate in school plays etc. Well, after much debate I settled on the canon 1.8 85mm usm. Will post some pics later as they are downloading from a park trip this afternoon.

yeah, you helped push me over the edge. This file resolution do not do justice to the original file.

"Settled"???
I know what you're saying, though.
I've got that same lens, and it's on my camera 90% of the time...

Good for you. It's my one and only lens so far and came universally praised. I did look at the 50mm but when you are going for the 1.4, the difference in price is negligible. The more telephoto aspect is great and the sharpness is awesome. I think that if you eventually purchased the 70-200 f4 (unless you have deep pockets for the quicker ones), then this will still have a place in your kit bag as it is light and fast.
It certainly gets you far enough away from kids to not be in their face, whilst not being too intimidating looking either. Not having to worry about zoom is one less thing to get wrong in those fleeting moments.
Whilst not a consideration now, I do think they hold their value very well, which is very reassuring.
Enjoy.

It is such a sharp lens, here is a shot I took at the park a few days ago. Wide open F1.8

I am considering one of these also... I am starting to really like this lens.
Congrats on getting your new lens, and please enjoy.

Thanks. Nice peice of Glass.
jbradc, nice capture!
Oh, I just picked up the hood for it at my local camera store for $25. I do not know why canon doe snot sell hoods with all their lenses. I love that fact that tamron does, as I am a firm beleiver in hoods and HATE having to order one whe it could easily be included in the lens package itself.
