This lens is just the thing I needed. IS is much better than the 75-300 IS (which wasn't too bad to begin with) This lens is super stealthy. Smaller than my 24-70L and it really feels solid and the weight is good on the camera.

I was quite torn after some negative posts here, but the weight, size, better IS and black color won me over. While I know the 70-200's are not far away in price and I am sure their performance optically is better, this fits my candid style perfectly.

I will have to post some examples of more of my low light experiments, but so far the IS really gave my handheld technique a big boost. I can't wait to check it out in the daylight. I know about the lens flare, and I hope I can control my shots.

I have this lens and love it. You'll hear nothing bad about it from me except it's a little pricey. For those who can justify the cost, it's a great lens.

Congrats. I think you'll be really happy with it. The DO's have their place. While they might give up some optical quality to a standard refractive lens like the 70-200 and 100-400, the 70-300 is about half the size and weight. Be sure and post some shots with it.

Congratulations. I am personally torn about this lens and the 100-400 L. I love its' compact size. Can't wait to see your posts.

I like your by-line: "If you don't have it when you need it, you can't shoot it." That is why I bought this lens. I am psyched, as my 75-300 IS looked like a cannon in comparison. This lens carries very well.

My wife has the 75-300 IS and I liked it well enough. I got the Tamron with my 20D and is ok and small but no IS and no DO so I am still looking.

i have had my DO lens since mid march. i am still working on my "relationship" with it. i am not a professional photographer, so i have much to learn on handling this lens. i have taken some awesome shots with it and i have taken some awful shots. i love the IS. the lens has a solid feel to it. i went to the zoo last saturday and took some inside shots of the animals. was very surprised at how well it did with low light. i expected much worse by what had been written on this board. the outside shots, of course were much better. i am an artist who specializes in watercolor and pastel portrait work. i will use the lens to gather resource material. it is impossible to paint portraits of children from life. they won't sit still. i have to use photography. the DO lens helps me to take photos without being obvious. they can be playing outside or actively doing something where i can gather candid shots. i also attend historical reenactments and gather portrait material from them. i am especially drawn to civil war "battles" and mountain men encampments. this lens will be perfect for me.

Congratulation. Other than expensive it is a superb lens. I love it. Don't forget to post some pics.

Sorry, work is getting in the way of my photography! I took some shots yesterday at lunch break in the local woods. Unfortunately, I left the camera on ISO 1600 and WB of indoor from the night before and the pictures just were not up to snuff to post. I will try again.

Anyone with FF DSLR can provide feed back on this lens?

Skip, look at my 24-70 vs. 70-300 DO post for my first comparison. This was not a one-to-one shot comparison, but same day two minutes apart, different distances. I should really show both my 75-300 ID and the 70-300 DO IS as a comparison next time.

I have other shots where the difference between the lenses is not that great, but this one shows offf the 'L' quality of the 24-70 nicely. In other words, for the price, if you don't want the stealth factor (which the DO has hands down!) the 100-400L would be the better lens.
