I thought I'd see how some of the Lily images I've taken would look in black and white. Here are 3 samples...

I wish I hadn't lost the detail in the two bright areas on this last one, but I couldn't recover it in Photoshop.

I like #3 the most, I dunno why it just looks more pleasing to the eye to me. #1 is nice as well. #2 has "rings" of light behind the flower, I find those distracting. Nice photos tho, Lilies are my favorite flower. =o)

the pics are actually wonderful - i like all the variations in tones and color. I am having a problem with the format of the print - size - and the lily in it....the square doesnt seem to fit nor does the layout of the lily. It seems awkward sideways....might want to play with the position of it a little more.

The third one is really good. I like the way the sun or light is coming through making a star.

Thanks for the comments. I used a monolight with a snoot on it behind the flower for the lighting. Yes, that last one would have really been good had I taken it a couple of shots later and hadn't moved the light. I used that shot to adjust my exposure by looking at the histogram and I also I was getting a little bit of direct light into the lens so I moved it a tad. I wish I had left it the way it was after adjusting the stop a bit. I guess it shows that you should consider each shot as a keeper, even if you don't think it will be.

C, I understand what you are saying about the square. I think a more rectangle format would have been better, but this is full frame side to side and I only cropped a bit off the top and a bit more off the bottem so there wasn't so much empty space. I was shooting in vertical format with my camera, but I'm going to keep the format in mind next time when I'm shooting a long flower like the Lily.

Sue, yes I think the 2nd one needed to either have a smaller light circule or else a bigger, less pronounced circle of light. The snoot was only about 6" from the back of the white diffusion panel I had between it and the flower.

Thanks again.

#1 is the best - ethereal. Like the flower was ex-rayed. The others look created rather than taken.

Thanks Barb, I appreciate the comment. I bought my wife some more flowers so I'll be using some of the comments I've gotten on these on them to see what I can come up with. I told her she can have them just as soon as I'm done. :D

Thanks AG. Actually, I've not gotten around to printing these yet. I've been meanng too, but I've been to busy to work on them for printing. It's on my list of things to do though. Thanks for the comment and for looking.
