I recently purchased a 30D which came with a 1gb CF card. I want to buy another card, perhaps an 4-8gb one. The manual says only buy Type I or II cards. Is this a requirement? I'm thinking perhaps when the 30D was new, there were only Type I or II cards available on the market. What do the different types mean anyways?

If you have a 30D, let me know what you recommend, thanks.

Type I and Type II refer to the thickness of the card; Type I are the thinner, 3.3 mm cards that you're almost guaranteed to be getting. Type II cards are 5 mm thick; you'll see them in microdrives or in communications (WiFi or GPS) cards more than in CF memory cards. These should not be confused with SanDisk's range of cards Ultra II, Extreme III, etc. Those are strictly marketing terms, and aren't used by anyone other than SanDisk. If you want to get an idea of how different cards will perform in your 30D, check out Rob Galbraith's CF Database (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007-8478).
