I found this a while back and though it would interest some of you guys. The author comes off a bit harsh sometimes. I think however, that he makes a lot of good points. I found quite a bit of useful info in his write-up.

It is good but goes against what most photogs have on their website-- flash/and music.

Hah, yeah. That is true. I think as far as flash goes, it could go either way. I do think that for the most part music is a no no.

I dislike the loading time of flash. Besides that it looks good mixed with php or html.

this is true. :) I very recently came across a very nicely done flash site done by a forum member here. it loaded pretty nice and zippy considering it was flash and the images were pretty nice and big.
i think that flash gets slow when people try to, well... make it too flashy. Pun intended. ;-)

Just like the tilting of wedding images. It is ok in moderation. However, it is something it is WAY over done. Flash is something that people think is the end-all, be-all of website design. Flash is good in moderation, but not in its entirety. There are a lot of people who are "surfing the net" on their mobile/smart phones and most can't handle flash.

Because most photographers do it, doesn't mean it's the best option. I agree that the flash thing has become a defacto thing and we all do it to at least it make it difficult for someone to copy our images but the music is just annoying and has to stop. Save it for the CD or presentation that you do it in person.

Agree. Music is obnoxious. No two ways about it. Some folks' music may be less so than others', but it is all still one and the same: obnoxious.

Great Info...
In the 7th point he said
"7. If you do not have sufficient copy, or any REAL TEXT on your home page (not in an image), and to a lesser extent your whole site, hire a copywriter and fire your webmaster NOW. Content is King, repeat after me CONTENT IS KING. Search engines don’t index fancy graphics and Flash, they index text. Good ol’ reliable text."
I saw many photographers gallery site, Most of the photographers doesn't care about this, even they didn't think much on Search Engine optimization.
But want to tell them, Search Engine can give you much more exposure.
Check out my post where i write some points on 'on page optimization techniques'
Hope that will help too,

Great article - though we obviously have to balance some of these things (flash, images) in our field!

I freelance in web design and I agree with all of the above. Flash as splash pages and websites that use Flash for 80-100% of the website = no-no! Ugh and what's up with "designers" coming into the scene with music players on their website? Seriously. It's annoying, inconvenient, and unnecessary. I'm already listening to something and your lousy designer to add music to interfere my audio. 90% of the time that is the reason why I click the "X" button on websites within the first 5 minutes - after searching for that darn "STOP" symbol of course.

This one's my favorite:
"DO NOT try to reinvent the website navigation. Put it on the top, the left, hell even the right will work but do not try to reinvent the way people interact with digital interfaces while trying to actually sell your product or service. People will get confused, then annoyed, then pissed, then gone."
No magic spinning dials of menu choices, or mysterious images that don't say what they represent. Stick to what people expect and already know how to interact with (also know as "Mystery Meat" navigation by http://webpagesthatsuck.com/ ).

Loved this one...
Look at it this way, even Macromedia/Adobe, the maker of Flash doesn’t have an all Flash website, do you think there’s a reason why? Oh yeah, they want to make actual money...

All good tips, at the end of the day this is a business and you want to facilitate connecting your audience with your product, not throw obstacles at them left and right

Took a look at your website, and I suggest you shorten up your "about" text. Your web program provides such a small space for text it forces the reader to scroll down and that funky scroll bar may not be evident to many users so a bunch of your text may not be seen. Scrolling should be another "no-no" on that list of "don't"'s in web design.
