My little one loves to eat. This was his 1st visit to Olive Garden. I had just gotten my first DSLR (XTi). I have not had time to learn anything about it yet, nor do I know a lot about taking pics other than point and shoot, so these were taken in auto mode. Any advise will be greatly appreciated. I don't even know where to start learning.

You are braver than a lot of parents I know heading to Olive Garden with the smaller kids in tow! Good for you. The first shot seems to be a bit out of focus - set the focus points on your camera to the center point only and go from there with that issue.

These look like Auto photos -with flash-exposed subjects and completely dark backgrounds. Once you get more into the manual modes you can drastically improve these shots by balancing the exposure of the subject and the background a bit more.

I echo what bauerman suggests... The centre point focus is great... aim at your son's eyes, and then when in focus hold it and compose your shot. The eyes being sharp are the biggest thing in people photography... Thanks for sharing
