I was just given the Canon Speedlite 420EZ by my yearbook teacher and just received the EOS Rebel XSi, but they don't seem to be compatible. I'm new to external flashes so is there any tips to try and make it compatible or an adapter or anything along those lines?
Thanks.

you need to be shooting in manual AV or TV mode and set the flash to manual

That does not seem to be working for some reason.

I have the flash pushed in all the way, on aperture priority and am on M1/32 for the flash, maybe it's not compatible with the Rebels, I don't get why it would be compatible with other Canon D-SLR's but not the Rebels. Thanks for the help.

When you say that it's not compatible, what exactly does that mean? Are you saying that the flash is not firing at all? And there's no lightning symbol icon in the viewfinder to indicate that a flash is mounted?

Leo, there is no flash icon anywhere in the viewfinder. The flash will not fire at all, however when I press the shutter to focus the AF assist still goes off.

I'd rather not say, it's gonna make me look beyond stupid. It was the batteries, all of the things on the display worked so I figured the flash would still work, clearly not the case. Put in a new set of batteries, set it on manual and I could here the flash powering up. I always automatically go to all the technical aspects of electronics and then forget to check the common sense stuff, LOL. Anyways, thanks again. You made my month.

Well, if it'll make you feel any better, you're not the first nor the only person to do that around here. :D
At least your thread didn't go for several pages before you figured it out.

Least you're willing to admit it. Most of us will just tell everyone it was a "loose wire" or something :-p

Just stumbled on this thread while checking out a 420ez,and I have to say thanks for the laugh..Wonder if an 420ez or a 430ez would "fry" my G7?..Picked up both in a junk shop, but not sure of the voltage yet..Gonna try and find that site with lots of old flashguns and their voltages..I think between 2-5 Volts is all the Canons are tolerant of..

A 420 EZ is not frying a modern digital camera. But it will not work in any automatic mode. That takes an EX.

Works well,a good flashgun although it looks HUGE on the g7..You have a certain amount of control and using a mixture of different shutter speeds and different levels of output I got some "correctly"exposed indoor shots..I think 1/50 sec & 1/8 th of full power worked best for me in this light..plus you have the bounce & swivel options as well..main thing is the voltage is safe on a modern digicam, well the G7 anyway,it's around 5 volts.

will the 420ez work with 450d automatic mode?

Nope. In the Canon line you will need an EX series flash.

Per the norm .This has been very informative. I'm looking at a 420 EZ and this has been very helpful.
Thanks all.
