Give us a new pro camera you freaks!

Though saying that, this does look like a nice model!

The Specs sound too good to be true. Besides there still isnt an entry level DSLR in the market which can out do the 450D. Canon can still take it easy... they are yet to conquer the Nikon D300 and thats where they should be spending all their energies on.

I'm betting getting out an entry level DSLR with video is the main reason behind this one.

out of curiosity - does canon (or any other camera manufacturer) make a larger profit from selling the body or the lenses? Is the act of bringing P&S people to the DSLR with a fancy entry level body worth the glass that they tend to buy thereafter?

but on a more concrete basis - if this one is true - I think it would be fantastic (for people like me who are still in the P&S mode!)

D90 Competitor?

D90 Competitor?
D90 retails fairly close to 50D already. With these specs, a retail price 100-200$ lower than 50D can be expected but then I dont see many going for this cam at that price. If they price it too low then it will canniblize the sales of 50D, either way the specs still seem to good to be true.

kyzen
19th of March 2009 (Thu), 14:57
I'm also curious where in their lineup it's going to be priced.

I'd say 12MP + video is much more likely than 15MP + video if Canon wants people to continue buying the 50D.

Hell, I'd personally be OK if it were identical to an XSi but with slightly better high ISO performance, and a better AF unit.

So, you're saying you want a XSii? Probably better than a XXii, or the dreaded XoXo (useful only for taking shots of your significant other).

How long do you think it will be from announcement to in stock and on sale.

I want to buy a cam, and will be waiting for this one, but want to buy the 450d and in 30 days return it to get a full refund and then just buy this one. Do you think it will be around the same price? Obviously the 450d price will drop significantly.

I guess most people didn't read this part:

Besides, it seems that releasing the 500D now would essentially cannibalize their 40D and 50D.

oh gizmodo, how it never fails to amaze me with stupid comments. Didn't the XTi have 10MP when the 30d had 8.2? Didn't the XSi have 12 when the 40d had 10.1? If the 50d now has 15MP, the XZi (or whatever they name it, maybe just Xi?) should really have 18MP, 20% more than the advanced amateur camera before it.;)

Just wait, three days to come and go, then you'll get your answer.

If it's the same size as the 400/450D then i would still much rather the 50D, the top display is incredibly useful, rear jog wheel and the physical size in my overly large hands. That's the reason i went for a second hand 20D over a new 400D.

randomlinh

sounds overspec'd, but if they get even 720p on an entry level cam, I'm all for it. I don't really want to replace my 20D/40D yet, and if I can get in on a cheap lightweight for-fun camera to use my lenses on, count me in. It can double as my lightweight travel SLR.

of course, this all depends on pricing, heh.

I have my own simple law on these camera gear values.

All camera gear goes down in value after you have bought it.

Only high quality glass has a much slower value loss. The exception to this law is after the recent huge hike in UK lens prices some of my lens are worth more than I paid for them!

On the other side of the coin, the 300D I got in 2004(?) at about £600 is now being sold for about £80 second hand in some cases. My 300D now comes to work with me! If it gets damaged I haven't lost anything of large value!!

Is this an April fools day joke early?

As far as specs are concerned, the 500D is rumored to have a 15-megapixel sensor, DIGIC IV imaging processor, ISO levels up to 12800, an articulating LCD with 900K resolution an some sort of 1080p "movie mode"—an extension of the 5D Mark II

I doubt that you will see these specs in a lower end camera in the next few years. It would kill the 50D and 5D MKii market share. Why would Canon undermine two new products that are selling, to offer a set of features comparable in a lower end camera.

You just have to love the rumour mill.

Matt.

I wont be suprised if they put the sensor up to 15, they did that with the 400d/40d. I guess they will with the 50/500.
I'd like to see a bigger body though, and bring back the second LCD, although saying that, i wont be buying one :P

Wait - I thought Canon already had a 500D - isn't it a close up filter? Ok, I can see it now - a guy calls the camera store looking for a 500D and the sales guy says sure, we have them in stock and the price is only $1095.00. Customer says WTF!!! when did Canon raise the price? I thought the 52mm 500D was only about $100.00? The sales guy says no, Canon does not make a 52mm efs lens but you can buy the 500D with the 18-55mm IS or the new 30mm !!!???!!!

Let the rumors begin - LOL

Why would Canon undermine two new products that are selling, to offer a set of features comparable in a lower end camera.. Could be that the Nikon D90 is spanking Canon and though many praise the virtues of the 5DMkII, It's never going to be the huge number seller that a Rebel camera is. More cameras = more lenses.

Wow, the Rebel line hasn't gone any higher than 1600 ISO for awhile, and they're going to add 3 more stops? Unlikely. Well, it's really only adding one stop, ISO3200. The other two ISOs, 6400 and 12000 are fake ISOs, just like the 50D.

With that many MP on the sensor I would love to see how terribly unusable a shot is at iso12800. Hell, I don't like going above 400 on my XSIf they use the same sensor as the 50D, you can see that today. 12800 is horrible, but in a pinch it gets an image.

Photographers should welcome the release of a new line of Canon DSLR's, because it will drive down the price of older cameras that can generate great images. Having a 500d available will probably drop the price of the 400d and 450d to under US $500, and refurbished cameras could cost as little as US $300 (which already has happened with some Olympus models). New cameras are great news for those who want to keep their money in their own pocket. :)

I'm not going to say it will happen for sure, but there is a EOS related event scheduled for tomorrow. I expect we will see either a 1D MkIV or a 500D. And Canon has always (unlike Nikon, and always being about 10 years) put high features in the Rebel series first, like higher MP or live view. Many people were surprised that the 50D came out when the Rebel was at 12MP. Those specs would not surprise me. However, it will probably sell for a little more than the XSi/450D currently does.

Yes, I read about it this morning. I've been waiting for Canon to come out with a DSLR that's got video and also affordable, and this one just might not be affordable for this guy.

What I'm looking for is an affordable Canon DSLR with video. This Canon 500D takes only 27 minutes of video at the lower resolution. I need much more than 27 minutes of video for my purposes.

I suspect that now the new DSLR''s that will be coming out will have video capability.
Perhaps not the very very high end, but the medium to low end should.

I do a fair amount of photo slideshows and would now like to put some video in them.
So, it looks like I'm going to have a long wait before the DSLR that I want comes out.

It sounds like you need a real video camera. Video cameras don't take good stills and still cameras don't take good videos...at least not for a LONG time.
