Phil Askey ends with a remark:
Canon's winning streak can be put down to some great product design and the two killer technologies which are at the heart of the all of their current digital SLR's; the unique CMOS sensors and excellent DIGIC image processing. It's going to be interesting to see how the competition respond.
How will other engineers respond. If something better than CMOS+Digic is invented..... WOW for the future of photography...

the noise graph on page 19 shows the 300D as better than the 350D.
What the hell is going on there? A typo?

Note that the XT was shot under its default parameter, which is +1 for contrast, sharpness and saturation. This usually delivers a punchier image with just a tad more noise. With this Rebel and my old Rebel, I always shoot under parameter 2 (which is the default parameter for the 10D and 20D).......just want more control without much of the noise.
Another thing that needs to be noted is the fact that the D70 still compares favorably to Canon's newer offering at the exact same price point (body only). Kudos to Nikon for introducing such a great camera that raised the ante for entry-lever DSLR's. Too bad they are just lagging behind in sensor technology and image processing algorithm, which is really the heart and soul of digital cameras nowadays.
Last thing that needs to be noted is the HUGE "EOS SAFARI" logo on that flying balloon at the sample image section.

Well, I don't really know what I'm talking about here (ie, just an assumption), but I would think that the reason it has more noise is because it has a larger number of pixels. The greater the number of pixels the greater number of noisy pixels.

I saw Adobe Camera Raw 3.1B mentioned in the page 18 software of the 350D review.
But I can't find it in Adobe web site. Anyone know where to download it?

But Phil Askey and his crew at dpreview.com have been good at staying neutral to brands. I think he and his crew went on this press junket for Canon, since he's got a bunch of other Canon camera's he's reviewed recently, and they all show pictures of Africa. I saw the review for a $170 A510 with pictures from Africa and thought about why he would waste good money to review a little dinky camera at that location...now it makes sense.

I mentioned this in a post several days ago, but here again for you.
"From Adobe forum(s) the news that new ACR 3.0 shipped on CS 2 CDs will NOT support any cameras beyond those now supported. This means it will NOT support the Rebel XT nor the Nikon D2X.
Now the good news -- Adobe will release a beta version of ACR 3.1 that WILL support these and perhaps some other cameras. This is scheduled in early May.
The beta version will work ONLY on CS 2 and Photoshop Elements 3. Owners of other versions will have to upgrade for this feature.
This seems to be a legitimate happening. Check further on Adobe forums or Adobe.com."

At the very least, XT owners with Photoshop CS can download the Adobe DNG converter for ACR 3.1 and convert their RAW files to DNG and open as normal in CS.

True........but I'm just waiting for a Nikon fanatic to realize this and point out that Phil is being paid by Canon to put Highly Recommended ratings on thier products............

Another interesting point is that the 350D comes with a markII version of the kit lens.
I didnt even know one existed.

I'm sure Roanjohn is absolutally right in his explanation,i forgot all about the settings:oops:
All other tests i've seen show the 20D and 350D to have less noise than the 300D.
How do they do this and still have smaller pixels? By improving other things!:)
Pixel size isn't the only factor.Amoung the other contibuting factors the big ones are improvements in the on-chip noise reduction and a better design for the microlenses.
This white paper from canon shows these things very well
