Can some one tell me what settings to use when using the 580 on a 20d. I have tried the ettl and full auto but all the indoor pictures look very dark. Is there a setting that I can make on the camera as well as the flash for a good flash photo?

What camera/flash settings are you currently using which give you the dark pictures?

I have been using the default. Putting the flash on the camera and using ettl, however when I use p mode and set the compensation uo 1 to 1 1/3 the pictures are better.

Try this.
Camera settings: Manual (M), one shot, center focus, ISO200, AP f5.6, SS 1/60 (slower if background is still too dark or adjust to your liking), set CFn to have the flash emit AF assist (does not work with AI Servo).
Flash settings: Ettl, bounce/angled (pull out the built-in white plastic), FEC +1/3

Happy Shooting!

Thank you for the information. It is appreciated. I would like to know why the camera does not take a decent flash photo on the auto or p setting?

You shouldn't need to increase FEC by 1and 1/2 to get a decent exposure with the 20D. Are you increasing FEC or EC? What is the disatnce to the subject? If you are in a small room with white walls that could be shutting down the flash. It would be helpful if you could post the picture (downsized) and the EXIF.
