View Full Version : Low-Cost Pool Noodle Camera Support
Belmondo
6th of April 2005 (Wed), 20:24
As some of you are already aware, I left my big Bogen tripod with the Wimberly head on it sitting in the middle of the desert several days ago. Since then I’ve been scrambling to come up with a low-cost replacement until such time as I can afford a more suitable tripod/head. I believe I’ve come up with something that will do the job, and will perhaps be the precursor for a whole new family of photographic support systems. I have no doubts that many of you will see this and ask, “Why didn’t I think of that.”
The simple answer is, you’re not me.
I must confess to being blessed with an unusually creative mind. ‘Unusual' is the operative word here---none of my ideas ever work, but they are original.
Allow me to introduce you to ‘Belmondo’s Pool Noodle/Birdcage Hybrid Photographic Suspension System.’ It is a marvelous bit of engineering based on a birdcage stand, half a dozen zip ties, and a Pool Noodle. (Don’t you just love that name?)
http://www.onlinephotographers.com/gallery/albums/Hot-August-Nights/Birdcage_Pool_Noodle.sized.jpg
Design:
The heart of the BPNBHPSS is a birdcage stand. Everyone has one buried in the far recess of their garage, basement, or attic. If you don’t have one, sneak into your neighbor’s garage. He almost certainly has one and will never miss it.
The harness is made by stringing cable ties end-to-end and securing them to the top of the birdcage stand. A length of Pool Noodle is slit up one side and slipped over the bottom of the cable tie loop to form a cushion for whatever piece of equipment is going to be supported. I like to call it 'The Loop of Death.'
Another length of Pool Noodle is placed over the bottom of the birdcage frame to act as a part of the failsafe emergency cushion that hopefully will prevent damage to the camera when the harness fails and/or the birdcage frame collapses, as it almost certainly will as the weight of the load approaches 1/2 pound..
Performance:
In the photo, you will notice a 1-gallon ammonia bottle simulating a large lens. The diameters are roughly equal. It is assumed that the support will work similarly with a larger lens like the 500mm f/4, although the birdcage hoop did start to go egg-shaped when there was ammonia in the bottle----a possible design defect.
Possible Improvements to Basic Design:
The base is approximately 9” diameter. The stand tends to be a bit wobbly, and I’m considering attaching it to a 4ft X 4ft piece of ¾” plywood, although that might make it a bit too heavy, and will certainly have a negative impact on the portability.
Cost:
Anyway, I already had the stand, and the Pool Noodle cost $3.29. The cable ties cost about $.02 apiece, and I used roughly six of them. So far the entire project has cost in the neighborhood of $3.41. A half-sheet of ¾” plywood would have a very negative impact on the cost of this project, so we’re going to take our time deciding on that.
A Bonus:
Here’s the really good news. Pool noodles come in a variety of colors (http://www.9thtee.com/pooltoys.htm). I chose pink due to my highly developed sense of style, but others may choose a more conservative color scheme.
Conclusion:
There appears to be a weight limit of 4 1/2 ounces for the combined camera/lens combination. Also, because this is only a support system and not a tripod, you can't let go of the camera or it will fall to the ground.
We are continuing to improve the design, and will make the design improvements avaiable to you (at a cost) as they become available.

I think I have figured out the solution to the wobbely base. Four cinder blocks Devconed and bolted together would be a heck of a lot smaller than a 4 x 4 sheet of plywood and vastly easier to find. you could more than likely procure the above at any construction site. A lot easier to transport as well.
I too will order one of the BPNBPHSS if you can custom order me the Pool Noodle in Camo, without any company logo silk screened or other wise applied.

You know, in Baseball if you bat .300 you'll probably get into the Hall of Fame.
Now, I'm sure there are other Belmondo creations, but considering this and the 'Starbucks L Mug' I'd say you're batting .500.

If there was any doubt remaining - after checking your post count - that you have too much time on your hands, it has been forever removed :)
The failsafe emergency cushion is ingenious, however ... well done.

Finally, Belmondo! An answer to the prayers of those of us who cannot yet afford a chunk of white 'L' glass but crave the public attention it invariably attracts.
Just a thought... if you hacksaw a couple of feet off the bottom of one of those babies, you could probably pad the end of the remaining stub below the loop with a dozen or so windings of duct tape, stuff it into your belt, and have yourself a dandy wearable camera platform. Harder to lose; but then again, that might also turn out to be its biggest drawback :D
Have to say, as a fairly recent arrival, that your unfailing wit and good humour is a terrific asset to this Forum. It is very much appreciated.
Cheers,
Terry

You'll have to wrap a whole lot of duct tape around that baby before I'm stuffing it in my pants. Thanks for the suggestion, though. Unfortunately, I only see serious potential for maiming myself, and that would certainly draw the wrong kind of attention.

Sir I always thought of you with the greatest respect and admiration, your very words contained such gravitas and authority that one could not help but be in awe of you presence. I am afraid I have to write and tell you now, that this is no longer the case, all the respect and yes I am not too proud to admit it, hero worship that I had for you has now gone. What did it take to cause the amazing fall from grace?
The admission that you actually eat “Pot Noodle”
All the former respect has turned to sympathy and I am busy trying to organize food parcels to be dispatched to Indian Wells as I type.

Mad you say? I fairly doubt it.
A couple of hours playing around in the garage with an old bird cage stand, a hand full of zip ties, a Pool Noodle and a old plastic jug has produced offers of a new tripod, food parcels and medical treatment.
Brilliant I say, just brilliant!

...stuff it into your belt, and have yourself a dandy wearable camera platform. He could just put the loop around his neck & sing that wonderful old anthem for the functionally 'special', "They're coming to take me away, ha,ha, hee, hee, ho, ho..." (NO, I don't wish to discuss why I still remember the lyrics!)
A couple of hours playing around in the garage with an old bird cage stand, a hand full of zip ties, a Pool Noodle and a old plastic jug... ...is certainly a cry for help, but probably harmless self-inflicted therapy!

I'm home now and I am able to view the image now. Hmm, wonder why I couldn't at work. Probably the image didn't make it through the XXX blocker or whatever.
Anyway, I think that camera support has some real potential. If I were going to use it, I would rest the lens on the the bottom part of the circular support. Then, I can use the top part to rest the Better Beamer flash assembly. Or, as I have always wanted to shoot my still camera and video camera in tandem, this support system would fit that bill very nicely. Still camera on the bottom and the lighter-weight camcorder at the top to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. :D

Hey PacAce,
If you scatter some bird seed around the base of "Belmondo's Last Stand", you could possibly off a lot more of them before your shoot is over.

it's killing me, but who is that in the bed ....in the shot ? http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif

Here's my chance to really enhance my image here in the forum, but the sad fact is, that's actually a sofa bed, and it's in my garage. All the lumpy bits are just pillows.
I have actually been plotting against that sofa as it has been taking up space in the garage since we first moved into the house---maybe 5 years now. For some reason, Lois seems to like the idea of having the thing out there, no doubt as a possible place to send me when my behavior dips from poor to unacceptable.
