Just wanted to see what people were doing as I read the manual for my new Nifty and it recommends one.

The hood is a pain to put on..and remove...but I do use it. I haven't experimented with and without.

I keep the adaptor for the hood on, and I occasionally put the hood on. I'll use it for the theatre pics i'm going to do with it. Usually I don't bother.

I have the 1.4 but the answer is the same. It is on and stays on all the time. Don't go out without it. Hoods only help they never hinder . . .

Most photoshops sell inexpensive screw on metal lens shades. I picked up a black one and use it whenever I use the 50. A lot cheaper than the Canon model and looks a lot better too.

I use one whenever possible. Would like a 1.6 crop factor hood for all my lenses (have for only one).

I've got hoods for all of my lenses. The 50mm f/1.8 and the kit lens both have the screw-on collapsible type. They were cheap enough, but I think I'm going to get the proper Canon hoods for each lens. Mainly, I notice some vignetting on the kit lens when it's wide.

Can't have that...

The front element on the 50/1.8 is recessed enough that I never felt the need to buy a hood.

I always use hoods on my lenses. For protection and the benefits of what they are designed to do to control errant light.

What are the advantages of using a Lens Hood?

As you can see i know little about them.

• keeps unwanted light outside of your lens

• In case you decide to bump into a wall, the lens hood will take the hit instead of your lens ;)

And, at least in the case of the 85mm f/1.8 prime, it also looks pretty bitchin'...

I just got the hood for the 85mm 1.8 and yes it does look bitchin! The inside of the canon hood is like, well, a velvet material for lack of a better word. Very cool. I love the look of the font element of this lens. Its one big hunk o'glass. I feel very special with it AND the hood. LOL. People just stop and look amazed at the the 20D with grip and the 85 mm w/hood. It just screams pro. Man am I a poser or what? Check out this LINK (http://www.tamron.com/news/corp/tv_commercial_movie.asp) , the video os pretty damn funny. It proves that chicks really do love long lenses.

I would if I had the 1.8 Why spend $s on equipment if you're not going to get the best out of it?

I use lenshoods on all my lenses. It's good cheap protection, and gives better quality output. The 50/1.8II is no exception (although it is already recessed enough to prevent flare in most situations).

I use a collapsible rubber one on it as well as the 85 and now I'm considering getting one for my 24-70, because the stock one is just too friging big.

I use one of those metal screw on hoods. These are nice when using a polarizing filter, gives some surface to hold while turning the filter.
