View Full Version : Monopod Head question-Bogen 3229?

I am hoping to pick up a monopod, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the 3229 swivel/tilt head. I am a bit leery of the 6 lb support weight. Any thoughts? The heaviest set up I might use on it would be

20D
70-200 f/4
1.4x extender
420EX

and might be pushing the limit, especially in vertical orientation. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Although it is rated as 6 pounds capacity, it works well on my monopod. Two days ago, I used it with my 1D+ 70-200/2.8IS + 1.4x +550EX without any problem.

If your using the ring collar with the lens, the everything is balanced from there and vertical or horizontal won't matter. Another thought is to get an body specific "L" bracket from kirkphoto.com.

Check out this link from Really Right Stuff regarding a tech tip for using monopods. I have this with some larger lenses (I'm using the lens ring collar to switch to vertical and such) on beefy Gitzo and Manfrotto aluminum/carbon fiber monopods.

i have one on my monopod, works like a charm... I don't use it that often though.

I'm curious as to the USE of a tripod head on a monopod.

Monopods are not free standing so one hand holds the monopod, one had controls the camera (either remote or camera shutter), which hand controls the head?...

I've been hesitant on buying any head for my monopod since I can't understand how to control three things with two hands.

it's a monopod head ;)

Why use it... just so you could rotate the camera on x and y axis without having to rotate the whole monopod and tilting the monopod forward and back.

I was actually hoping to use the monopod head to rapidly switch from horizontal to vertical shooting, since the monopod itself will allow forward and backward tilt as well as side to side. If I am shooting parallel to the axis of rotation of the head, is that going to work?

P.S. I don't have the tripod collar for my 70-200 f/4. I suppose I would be better off just getting that, but it is about $100 more. (C'mon, Canon...$130 for a piece of white plastic?!?!? $30 less for the same part in a different color? )

Yes.

Todd, the head in question is (as cmM stated) a special device made expressly for monopod use. It's much smaller than a tripod head and has only one adjustment ... i.e., one axis ... to allow for rotating the camera into portrait orientation. It also adds quick release capability - the same RC2 as my tripod head - which is the main reason I purchased one.

Copy. Went ahead an ordered the 3232 since I use Velbon QR's.
