When you guys sell items either on ebay or the various forums, do you offer any sort of warranties?

I am not talking about a simple doa warranty or transferring an existing Mack or other 3rd party warranty to the new owner. No, I am asking if you sell me (for example) your used 5D body, will you PERSONALLY guarantee it to function as it should for a week, two weeks, 6 months.....?

Reason I ask is that I am selling my 1D MKIII (that just came back from Canon for mirror recall and c/a) and EVERYONE seems to want me to offer some sort of warranty other than a doa guarantee.

I understand that the camera is not cheap, but I am not a retail business. I have no repair center, I have no control over what you do with the camera once you get it (like shooting while white water rafting, kid drops it or something else). Also, stuff just happens. Circuit boards, electronics, etc.. Am or should I be responsible for some bad solder job or faulty flux capacitor from the manufacturer because it blew up three weeks after I sold it? It is a USED camera after all

I have no problem giving a day or so, but some people want weeks or a couple months, which as a private seller, seems insane!! No way would anyone private seller take back a used car after a week or so.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!!

I would guess that your prospective customers are enquiring about the Canon warranty about the work on the mirror.

I don't think they'd be asking you for a personal warranty underwritten by yourself.

If they were, it would be unreasonable in my personal opinion.

It's the buyer's obligation to check the worthyness of the goods immediately on receipt. If it's DOA, there's cause for return + refund (under gentleman's agreement).

Actually, they are asking ME to warranty in addtion to the Canon warranty.

The thinking seems to be since online retail photo equipment store A or K or B will offer warranty on their used (and higher priced) goods, I should also (while offering them cheaper).

Outside of my own exploits, how do other people deal with selling their used stuff?

Sure. I'd offer a warranty. And I'd boost the price by 15%.

Sounds like your "buyers" are just tire-kickers who want something for nothing.
