I'm interested in getting a wireless remote for my 5D II but don't know where to start looking. What model will I need? Does Canon make it ? What is the cost?

Canon's wireless shutter is insanely expensive even by photography accessory standards, and just controls the shutter release:

My recommendation would be to look at a 3rd party one like one of these:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13175
Dealextreme is very reliable, and while that trigger is most definitely cheaper quality than the canon, it is also $400 cheaper!
Just make sure you get the right one with the plug that looks like this (which is what all but the rebel series use for triggers):

I've been buying Aputure wireless remotes from an eBay vendor in China, Link Delight. So far I've bought ones for Canon 30D and Nikon D200. They are radio wireless remotes, so don't need straight line-of-sight to work. The price is $20 with free shipping:
http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/link-delight-na?_nkw=5d+remote&_sacat=0&_fromfsb=&_trksid=p3911.m270.l1313&_odkw=&_osacat=0
One caveat: I couldn't ascertain if 5D Mk II uses the same remote as the original 5D. The search above is for 5D remotes.

I bought the RC-1 for my 5DII. But I have PWII's and cables. That's a $400 solution, but there are cheaper alternatives.

I forgot that the RC-1 was supported by the 5DMkII (it is not supported on most of the other Canon cameras besides the rebels). That is a very good option, just line of sight IR instead of RF wireless.
It is still more expensive than the knock off RF remotes though:

Does that knock off support mirror lock up? The Canon one doesn't.

I just bought an RC-1 off ebay for 99 cents plus $9.99 shipping. I'll post back when it comes in if it was new or not. All the reviews for the seller said it was new and legit so we'll see. Funny thing is that back when I had the Rebel and Rebel XT I bought an RC-1. When I went to the 20D I had to sell it. Now I have a 5D II and bought one again.

i dont think there's a wired or wireless remote that supports mirror lock up. however, it does support bulb exposure function. but i could be wrong.

i suggest buying that same product thru ebay if u can. i like the prices on dealextreme and all but their shipping time is horrible. i bought a few things from them and after 2 weeks from the order date i got an email saying they just shipped my order. it took another 7 business days to get here. i sent an email asking why it took them so long just to shipped it and never got a reply, of course. i didnt mind it if it took 2 weeks to ship if it was shipped only a day or two after ordering but 2 weeks after. that's just ridiculous for me. ebay sellers now are really quick on shipping it out right after purchase date. might take 2 weeks to get to u tho.
i have to say that the aftermarket wireless accessories are pretty good. the canon ones are so ridiculously overpriced. i dont even know when people buy them. its like a 2000% mark up or seomthing.

With the RF wireless remotes Mirror Lockup should work fine as it is pretty much identical to the shutter button on the camera.
With the RC-1 I believe you have to use the 2 sec mode and are stuck with having the mirror flip, waiting only 2 sec, then taking the picture.

Well, I never thought that there are this many different remotes. They go from 99 cents to up over $400. Which one do I choose? Thanks for sending the links, read them all and maybe e-bay is the best way to go. I just have to make sure it is the 3-prong female connector. Thanks for the help.

I'm using the same remote. I tried to find the HK knockoff, but there seems to be none. Also use a wired shutter release, of which there are plenty of $5 HK knockoffs.

Just to re-cap, apart from the RC -1 remote which is IR ,you can't get a third party wireless RF that allows you to use the movie function on the 5D Mark II, as well as normal shooting . Can you?

How about the one sold right here (http://www.procameragear.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/46_48/products_id/422) through POTN?

I can't say for sure.
But for a guess? If the remote works the shutter, and the camera is in movie mode, doesn't it figure that it should work in the movie function too?

Wait right there, I'm going to google pedantic. The 5D mark2 is not listed as being compatible but it probably is due to it's recent release.

I have to ask. Have you got a 5D Martk II?
You can't shoot a movie from the shutter release. You record by pressing set on the quick control dial and set again to stop. The shutter release is just for stills.

No I don't. That's why I prefaced my statement with I can't say for sure.

I have a few of the wireless remotes still available for those looking at the Phottix versions on ebay shipped from the US (see my signature).
I have ordered items from dealextreme before, and as others stated, it does take quite a bit of time to receive them.
I used to use IR remotes but when shooting on a nice sunny day, I found them to be hit or miss in performance, and have long since moved to RF remotes.

This seems to be the best choice from all the suggestions. I think I will give one a try. Thanks for the link.

Phottix Plato
When Phottix merges the Strato and Plato together, I will be sure to have those in stock. One thing I will say, Phottix really keeps reinvesting in their products, and over the last year or so I have seen very good improvements in their products from grips, batteries, filters and remotes.

I use the Canon RC-5. There's a 2 second delay but the remote is small enough for me to throw in the coin pocket of my jeans.
