Decision time. I have been offered the chance to purchase a Sigma 17-35 f2.8/4 EX. There is no money mentioned – it's for me to suggest a price if I am interested. I bought a 10d off the chap (a friend) and it's great condition. He has just spent £60 to repair the auto focus.

I do know that there is a revised model with a smaller filter end now from research on Ebay, but these are all new and there are none second hand.

Does anyone have any experience of this lens – good or bad? I have it in my hand, but have never really sparked with wide angle photography (it's on my to do list). Having bought a 10d, image quality would be very important to me (just for personal use though, not professional). I will put the money towards the 17-40L canon if there is a huge difference or see if I can find a very good deal on the 24-70L. It's a difficult decision as it would not be easy to do a back to back.

Is there an easy way to judge the picture quality of a lens?

Cheers for any info or advice.

Graham

Have you tried searching on www.pbase.com for sample images. I would think that if he is giving you the lens at a favoriable price; it may be worth it to take it. You can always save for the midrange lense, and the zoom for later on.
I purchased the 24-75 Tamron myself. just can't do 3x (cost) the Canon.

Thank you for your links. The first three are for the newer DG version sadly.

However, the last one was very useful – I really like the photographers work in one of the links. Don't think this is the lens for me though.

I'll get saving.
