Hello all,
I'm looking to pick up a new tripod soon and have been eyeing the Manfrotto 055 carbon fiber model(s). It comes with either three-section legs or four-section legs. Aside from that, the maximum height and cost difference is negligible, while the closed length differs by about four inches.
I'd appreciate any input from those among you who have experience with similar models (or the same ones). I think it would be faster to set up with the three-section model, but does one provide more stability over the other?

cheers, and thanks,
jim

Basically a 4 section tripod is good when you need the smallest folded "footprint." For airline travel, or you just want the smallest tripod to carry. However, in most cases, the fourth leg is a little smaller in diameter, so you may give up a little stability. Whichever is a better fit for your needs. Hope this helps.

The 4-section legs weigh slightly more than 3-section legs, and they take longer to erect. In general, 3-section legs are slightly stiffer and more stable, but they are longer when folded down.

I've always preferred 3 section tripods because in general they are more stable/stiffer and it's faster to setup and breakdown.

I've tried both, prefer 3 legs instead of 4. Time consuming for 4 leg tripod.

Update:
Thanks for the advice ... went for a 3-section. And what a deal! I picked it up at the one store in Toronto that actually had a Wimberley Head in stock. And the plates I needed. The store owner recommended I take a look at the Manfrotto 441 three-section carbon fibre tripod. It was listed in the store at $580, but on sale at $341. Picked that up in a flash. The same tripod is still listed at Henry's, probably the biggest camera franchise in Toronto, at $699, even though it is now a discontinued item according to the Bogen/Manfrotto website.

cheers,
jim
