I would like to put a basic border around some of my pictures. Kinda black background...at most a black background with a pinstripe white line which I have seen on some pictures... Allthough not new to photo editing the whole layering thing still is a little tricky and allthough imagine answer is in that direction I cant find out how to do it... The funny thing is in a lesser program than PS CS, I reckon you could click a button to "Add border", "select border style"

Anyway... any help on how to do and different looks would be much appreciated.

pretty simple to create:
-make a layer (if image is flattened)
-increase your canvas size (image->canvas size)
-create solid color fill layer (or regular layer and use the paint bucket to fill it with whatever color(black))
-change layer order to have your image on top
-go to ur image layer's layer styles, and add a stroke, and set the color to white for the white line around the image (outer glow will work as well).
-flatten image
done!

You can actually do pretty nice looking borders just by changing the canvas size a few times, and recording it to an action that you define to re-run later.

Here's an example. Try using Image->Canvas Size four times, making sure the center anchor point is selected in the Canvas Size dialog, and relative should be checked:

1) Width:2 Height:2 color:white
2) Width:10 Height:10 color:black
3) Width:2 Height:2 color:white
4) Width:20 Height:20 color:black

Hmmm, I thought in that thread Tim explained how he makes his border and it sounded just like what you were looking for (black border with white pin stripe). Sorry, I must misread you post.

Thanks for the options and advice.

I will try those options out.

Taking this another step forward it would be really nice to have a shopping lits of how to make different borders and examples.

PacAce, you could well be right and apologies if my response seemed un thankfull....not intentional. More than likley the content went over my head :-)

Since you sound like your using PS CS then do a search in google for photoshop frame actions. There are a lot of free ones out there that you would just apply to the photo. Just copy them into a folder called frames or borders or some such thing then open them in PS. The web site where you find them will probably have some basic instructions.

I use the stroke tool to do mine. In PS, select Edit, Stroke, the set the first line at 10 or 20 or whatever, select inside, then OK. Do it again, this time making it smaller. If it was 10 the first time, go 8 the second in a contrasting color. Then do it a third time with the original color and a 6px width.

There is a great frame maker called ID Imager it has a trial version for 21 days ( I think) but it has some great frames that you can adjust if you wish, the basic frames though are very good and it is easy to buy of the net too.

Try the forums on www.photozo.com. The double matte frame action is really good
