anyone tried this?
im debating getting it for soccer so i can get a bit more light out on the field at night. or maybe a 580ex and a snoot or something.

but really, is this a good idea?

Do they allow flash for night time soccer? If yes, then I would do it without the 1.4xTC. I would go for manual flash and keep flash 2-3 stops above ambient as you will be shooting at 1/250 (your typical sync speed) and don't want ghosting due to ambient getting in there.

Better option would be low noise at higher ISO body.

My 3200 shots aren't bad on the 1dmk3
Mainly wantig to see if the better Beamer was use by anyone

But yes, flash is allowed everywhere here

You don't need better beamer. I have tried it for night time high school football (american football) with and without better beamer on my 300mm f2.8 IS and I like it without the beamer. Beamer definitely throws light at more distance but then you need longer lens.

With 1dmk3, I would take high ISO shots as shooting with flash is not easy. I shoot at ISO800, f2.8-f4 and ss of 1/250 with 1dmk2. Flash in manual mode under the lens on monopod at 1/2 power. Flash is powered by cp-e4.

You can get away with 1/4th power (faster duration) and ISO 800 to 1250 F2.8 to F4.

High ISO is of course going to allow more ambient. The power, ISO and F stop all depend on ambient light reading.

I shoot night football with the 300 2.8 and a 1.4ext. I have a 580exII mounted on stroboframe. I shoot between 1/4 & 1/2 power. It will reach across the width of the field just fine.

More or less my setup as well, only a Sigma 530 Super (with a lower GN than the 580) and a Bogen flex arm/superclamp combo mounted to my monopod. I get decent reach to the opposite side although I tend to shoot as tight and a bit closer when shooting night games just to avoid the natural complications of doing such.

yeah, i haevnt tried to use a flash yet at a game, but if you guys are saying a 580 will reach, ill give it a go. It has to help out with the shadows on teh players from teh stadium light patterns.

oh yeah 580 is fine. There are +'s and -'s so just remember you have to take the good with the bad when it comes to flash.

no doubt. not looking for crazy results. just a tadd bit of fill flash. i was debating setting up two flashes at each corner of the field i am shooting to get it really bright lol
