Just getting used to taking bird shots . IMO this pic is not too bad but the seed under it,s feet look overexposed but the bird looks ok . What have i done wrong ? Stats : 1/50 , F5.6 , ISO200 . +1 EXP .

Thats true, the bird does have some cute feet! I would like them better if she was wearing toe rings and had a french pedicure!!

What was the focal length?

Why did you add +1 exp compensation at ISO 200? It does not look like a "dark day".

That maybe the cause of the overexposure. Did you spot on the histogram that that the shape of the curve was more to the right? Next time, dial down if you see this as you can always correct slight under exposure in PS.

Could you have tried ISO 100, no exp compensation and a slightly quicker shutter speed? Leave aperature as is to get the DOF.

Hi Rammy , only just getting to know DSLR photography so it,s great to get other peoples opinions . Day in question was sunny and cloudy so i thought the higher shutter speed with iso200 would be better . I am trying to get used to using the histogram for exposure and that seemed a little to the left the shot before . The histogram for that image is still a little to the left but with a flat band along the bottom going to the right . ps focal length is 200mm .

What have i done wrong ? What cam, lens combination? Give us more info to work with!
1/50 sec is too slow to handhold a tele unless you're using an IS lens, and maybe even then depending on focal length, wind, palsey, etc.
I'd crop a bit off the right - as it is now, the bird is looking "out" of the pic. A bit of sharpening would help, too.

3OOD and 70-200F4 was combination used . The pic was taken out of a watching hide so i did have somewhere to rest the camera but the lense end was shaded so i don,t know if this doesn,t help . Are histograms and exposure levels to be trusted ?

Are histograms and exposure levels to be trusted ? Yes, & no. Yes, if the brightest highlight is a flat white area, like a piece of paper. No, if it's a blown highlight.
