help with bird photography

I need some help, for all you bird photographers out there, how do you approach the subject that you are photographing? and what kind of lens are you using? I was trying to takes pictures of some falcons in my area and i find that they fly away as soon as i try to get close, i am using a 70-200mm lens, do i need longer?
