OK I'm going out on a limb here but I need a fast answer. Can we use our AE1 lenses on the Canon Digital EOS Rebel that I am thinking of purchasing?

The AE1 lenses are Canon FD mount lenses and can not be directly mounted to the camera but you can buy an FD to EF mount adapter from B+H that will allow you to mount them. You will have to meter manualy and set your apiture on the lens manualy.

If I am metering manually and setting the aperature manually I must really be compromising the picture dramatically. That sucks.

If you have good FD lenses then you still can get good pictures. If your exposure is correct then the picture will look great as long as the lens is of good quality. Another thing to consider is the adapter the fits between the body and lens acts as an extension ring and comes with all the benifits or disadvantages than comes with them.

I think Belmondo went down this road before at 600mm. We'll see if he chimes in.

The quick answer is that FD lenses aren't worth using on EOS- because the adapters have optics in them they degrade image quality.
The good news is that there are awsome lenses that can be adapted to EOS with no optical drawbacks (you still have to everything manually of course)
These include Nikkor,Olympus,Zeiss,Leica M ,Any M42 lens and others :)
There is a detailed thread in the archives-i'll try to find it

Still over in the 'EOS' sticky ... should be added to the EF sticky.
