The firmware hack enables functions that that hardware can do, but Canon have disabled in software. I used the wasia hack when I had my 300D, it enabled mirror lockup, some custom functions, a crippled AI servo mode (barely worth using IMHO), and ISO 3200. The Undutchables one is new and i've seen some reports of problems, but the Wasia one has been tried by at least thousands of people, and worked fine for me.
The link to the hack used to be in a sticky thread in this forum, i'm not sure since the re-organisation, google will find it.

I haven't pulled my camera out of the box yet, but how do I go about doing the wasia hack? Where can I read more about it?

There is a Yahoo group "canondigicamhacking", with all sorts of firmware hacks for the Digital Rebel. Registration is required, but free.
They have the latest Wasia hacks and a new "undutchables" hack.

Wow! I just went & checked out this Yahoo group. Makes me appreciate POTN even more. Yahoo needs to talk to Pekka & switch to this kind of format instead of making you click on the title & then on each reply in order to read them. Takes a bit longer than here.

Once you've downloaded the hack, you just put it onto your Cf card, put it into your camera and then switch it on. The camera will then ask if you want to upgarde the firmware.

Keep in mind that the firmware hack will void your warrenty.

What if it's a store warranty? Do you think they would know?

I would think if the camera dies and you can't change the firmware back
to the original, they will not honor the warranty.

Add in more is that even your camera is restored with the original geniue firmware from the cracked firmware, CANON may still void your warranty as some told that the dealer has a way to check whether or not your camera has been cracked.

Let's be accurate, it "may" void your warranty. There have been plenty of posts on this and other forums that owners have sent cameras in with hack installed by error or omission.
In those examples, Canon repaired the camera under warranty, sometimes flashing the original firmware back on, sometimes not.
I hacked mine a year ago and am pleased with it. Now I have the UD 2 hack and think it is great. Yes, my camera is now out of warranty, but I didn't consider it a big problem when it was.
So I will pose a question: Has anyone had a direct, personal experience with Canon refusing warranty service due to hacked software? Just first person, no cousins, friends, some guy at work or other 3rd parties.
YMMV.

The original hack has been out over a year and installed by literally thousands of drebel owners. Has anyone heard of even one warranty denial because of the hack? I have heard of someone getting the repaired camera back from Canon with the firmware reset to Canon's, and others with the repaired Camera returned with the hack left installed. Nothing about a voided warranty. Anyone with first hand knowledge either way out there? Feel free to enlighten us...

I'm looking to buy a canon digital, I would like to be able to shoot B&W photos, does the 300d do B&W...or with the firmware updates?
Thanks.

Go to the Yahoo digital camera hacking group (you need to register) and you will find links to where the file can be downloaded, plus detailed intsructions.
I don't have the link handy, but search the Yahoo groups, it will pop up.

No, none of the hacks give in camera B&W function. Easy to do in PS.
I have the function in my 20D but to be honest, I don't see the need for it. When I want a b&w image for effect, I do it in postprocessing.
That way I have both options open, colour or b&w.
