I use a rubber hood for my 50/1.8II. The drawback of rubber hood is that it cannot protect the lens enough. Moreover, the Canon's plastic hoods are said to be specific designed for their lenses (full frame) while some rubber hoods are not long enough. By the way, one advantage for rubber hood is that it's easier to use a polariser. Hope this helps.

One problem I ran into with a rubber hood on my minolta film camera was that at 35mm the hood would show up in pictures because it was too long.

That won't happen in the 1.6 crop bodies.

I also use a rubber hood on the 1.8/50 MKI, mainly because it was included when I bought it used. I find it convenient that you can fold it back and leave it on the lens, so you have it ready when you need it and it doesn't use much space when you don't.
Looks weird, though

Best regards,
Andy

i use one on my 50 f/1.8 works ok for me. I like the canon ones better of course, but for $9 it's ok.
