Since there seems to be a few threads mentioning lens hoods, I figure I'd jump into the mix.
Is there a Canon lens hood for the 50mm f/1.8 II?

Given how recessed the front lens element is, it might or might not be worthwhile. There's a poll/thread about it that's active at the moment. I only use the hood occasionally, it needs a little adaptor thing that comes with it, which itself acts a little like a hood, and I leave on all the time.

Incidentally, did you know about the game show host steve parr from New Zealand? Have a look here (http://www.soulpurpose.co.nz/mag/2001/10-spring/10_2001_80s_friends4eva.shtml) - are you him?!

Wow... that's weird.
No, not him. I'm far better looking, smarter, and have a better sense of humor...

Here is a picture of the 50/1.8II with lens hood reversed (beside the Tokina 17mm on the left).

Does the hood make it difficult to remove/replace the lense cap?

I replace/remove the Canon lens cap on my 70-200 with the lens hood on all the time (when not reversed). I'd say I have smaller than average hands.
And to the original poster, LENS HOODS ARE IMPORTANT, THANKS FOR THE CAPS. :)

Great picture! Sorry, I know this thread is about hood...
Such sharpness on the main objects with such OOF blur in the background. Was it taken by the 135L?

Create, yes, that is one pain with lens hoods... replacing/removing the lens cap.
I wish they had the caps that somebody suggested in a recent thread, with the "squeezing" mechanism on the front of the cap, not the side.
Oh, redbird, thanks for the comment *lol*
Yes, that was taken with the 135F2L at F4, ISO800

Can you use the lens hood on the 50mm F1.8 with a UV filter attached to the lens?

IMO, you don't really need the lens hood on the 50mm, although it certainly doesn't hurt. You can always use your hand to block any stray lights in some rare instances.
Having said that, I buy a lens hood for all my lenses if they don't come with it and in the case of the 50mm, basically only to give added protection. In the case of the 17-40/4L, I purchased a seperate EW-83DII only because the original lens hood is ridiculously wide.
As for the lens cap issue, I wish Canon would make the pinch type lens caps and have them come standard with all their lenses. The current style just makes no sense. Hasselblad makes some nice stylish ones that I use, although they don't come in 58mm size. Unless you have tiny fingers, it's very difficult to use Canon lens caps with hoods in place.
