I have a Canon 20D with a Manfrotto 3021 Tripod, and a Bogen/Manfrotto 3047 head which has a quick-release (pentagonal) mount. I have a Canon Flash unit, and wanted to mount this flash on a flash bracket to get it up off the camera, but still use the tripod at the same time.

Is is possible to use a flash bracket and the tripod at the same time (e.g., a flash bracket with a pentagonal quick-release mounting plate), such that I can quick-release the camera & flash bracket for carry-around, and then instantly remount the whole configuration back onto the tripod? If so, what flash bracket should I use?

My dilemma is that all the flash brackets I've seen seem to have their own (rectangular) mounting brackets/plates+mounting screws, and would not allow me to use the pentagonal quick-release plate which game with the Bogen head.

Any recommendations for this portraiture novice would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can always add your QR plate to the brackets molded QR plate.

Example: I own the Stroboframe Pro-RL. The frame comes "pre-QR ready" to accomodate a Stroboframe Quick Release (the metal at the base is molded for it).

I don't use stroboframe qr's, I use Velbon. So I attach my Velbon QR plate to the Bracket and it snaps in and can be removed from the tripod at will.

Now, my Pro-RL is free standing when I use the "kick stand". With my additional QR plate at the base of the bracket, it doesn't sit straight, but it still stands decently using the 24-70L lens (meaning prime lenses are okay as well). Fortunately, my Velbon QR plates are rectangluar. I don't know if every QR plates are as accomodating so you might lose the free standing capability when you attach your own QR plate.
