It seems as if any time I shoot an image with light sources reflecting with my S40 -- such as eyeglasses reflecting, Xmas lights in the shot, my lighted fireplace, even the shiny keys of a clarinet! -- the reflected light from the shot appears as if it was just transported on the Star Ship Enterprise: long "lines" of lights rays emanating from the point of reflection.

Please tell me what I am doing wrong and how I can remedy this problem.

I think what you are describing is a single bright light source at the edge of your picture frame. I've noticed it aswell both indoors and outdoors especially on a sunny day. If you zoom in on your subject or move to a different position, you will get rid of this 'intruder'. The old photographic adage applies here, try and keep your light source behind you. I hope this helps.
