I shot my first batch of RAW photos and used DPP 1.6.1 to convert them (after some WB and exposure changes). I love the power RAW gives you, but it certainly comes at a price of time and work.

After reading much of the RAW discussions here, I was under the impression that the images would be 'soft' and would require 'unsharp mask' work in Photoshop. My experience was that the pictures came out very sharp (see picture below). It seems as if I would have to blur the image to get nicer/natural skin tones. Does anyone have any comments?

I converted to jpeg and set the sharpen value to zero when converting. This picture has no post processing in PS.

Thanks.

Just a guess. Did you have your camera set to do any sharpening when you shot the images?
My RAW images are pretty sharp, too. The references I've read about RAW being flat refer to it being flat (no sharpening done in camera) when compared to JPEGs which almost always are sharpened in the camera. A properly exposed and focused picture will be pretty sharp with a 300D.

I am not positive about this but I believe the in-camera shapening only applys to jpg's.

You are correct and only if the parameter has been set to apply sharpening. If sharpening has been set to 0, there's still a bit of sharpening but it won't be much.

Personally, I don't use much USM on people pictures, it starts to bring out alot of the imperfections. But for landscape work, and others USM brings out alot of the details.
