Rather than waiting, why not use the version of EE you CAN download and install?
It's ALREADY a very good solution for online photo albums, I have used it for over a year without mayor problems.
What feature are you waiting for so desperately ?

Could not agree more!
1.5rc4 is awesome.
After digging deeper into styles for the whole Mambo thing, I've discovered the flexibility of EE as well.
You can make it, visually, just about anything you want it to be....
However, some of the features outlined for the next release will be pretty cool.
There is alot of "documentation" in the forum for rc4 which will help one master this version with little to no problem.
The next release will inadvertantly have "issues" and the build up of "documentation" in the forum will have to begin anew....

Next EE will offer a LOT of cool new features, but it does not mean 1.5RC4 is not useful. In fact the end user (meaning people viewing galleries) experience is quite similar in both, which matters most.
I do work hard daily for the next one - I truly regret and I'm sorry that I announced a false release data (it was pressed to give a timeframe :) ). I was optimistic, but because with programming everything affects everything and I have had to do lots of things which I did not anticipate, like how doing user upload in the end resulted in new upload system where you may enter full photo data for each uploaded photo in turn and where you can stop upload batch at any point and continue later from that point. This I just finished and it also means PHP timeouts in upload should be history. Other example of the "butterfly effect" is that because of the new structure system (nested menus etc) I ended needing to make all public pages use templates. Sudden suprpise features like getting to use third party new code which makes UnSharp Mask sharpening in GD2 possible means I needed to take time to integrate that to resize methods and test it all. All the new code and features need to be thoroughly tested and for this version I will not release a beta or RC, enough of those! - what I'll give out will be the release version.
WarrenO, if your sister donated $35 she has earned EE licence for it - EE has been $35 shareware since 1.3 (I have not been too clear about that, though). There is a LOT to be learned about EE with 1.5RC4 so I would not hesitate to set up gallery in that and then update to next version whenever it happens to come.

I'm not sure if one person's impatience would register as "enough" to speed up development on a script, but it would seem to me that being grateful and appreciative of what *does* exist is what really matters. And, I would hope a small minority wouldn't interfere with what is generally the consensus around here: Pekka's EE rocks; we're glad when an update occurs, and until then, it's "focus on what can be done now."
I was always told, "Make hay while the sun shines," and I think the learning experience of installation and tweaking is important.
WarrenO, I would be *glad* to assist you with installation of EE 1.5RC4. Instead of making a line, how about making a picture-full EE site for your sis...and make her happy. ;)
