I am thinking of getting a battery grip for my 50D, want to make sure that Grips advertised for 40D will also fit my 50D. Am pretty sure they are the same but double checking before I commit. Thanks

Yes it will work. So will the BG-E2 (for the 20D/30D), which is what I've been using since I got my 50D cameras.
