Funny thing happened on the way to the forum….

Dell (love them or hate them) has some good deals right now (10% off canon equip, $90 off $750+ purchase, stackable). I had my shopping cart all set up for the 17-40L and I brought the price to the mid $600’s… not wanting to be outdone, I opened another dell window to mess around with the coupons too see what else looked like fun (100-400IS, 350D, etc). One window was my 17-40L on the VERY last confirmation step, and the other window was a 350D (body, black) just “in my cart”. When I confirmed the “17-40L”, I actually BOUGHT the 350D by having too many open shopping carts/windows.

I feel like I got a killer price on it ($726.10, no tax, shipped), but I already have the 20D (almost brand new). Of course, I could return/cancel/fix my order, but with such positive reviews lately of the 350D, and such a good price, should I just keep it as a backup, or hope to entice the girlfriend to buy some “L” glass for “her” 350D that we could share? ;)

Hehehe, 100-400IS, 10-22, 17-40… Yes Dear, that’s the lens you (I) need…

I'd send it back, but if your girlfriend like to take pictures too and you can afford it I can't see why not keep it.
But as a backup ? Not unless you earn money on your pictures.

Wow. Must be nice to have an "extra" $750 to spend on a backup camera

This sounds like classic Dell behavior (judging from what I've read in the forum). I went to their site to check out this great sale, and it said nothing about it. I called them, and they said they don't carry the Rebel XT. Then I convinced them that they do--it's on their site--and they told me that maybe they do carry the camera, but no such sale is on. Then they told me that I could order one, but they couldn't promise its shipping date.

THEN they tried hard into talking me into signing up for a Dell customer account ...

Then they heard a polite "have a nice day", a click, and a dial tone. :-)

mike H: stop your bitchin' dell is one of the better online vendors out there. If you can find it on their website then order it! why call them up!?! I question your motives.

the 90 off 750$ and the 10% off are not stackable like you said...or I cannot get them to work.
I have a S$0BW75H54S60M for the 90$ off..are there any others?
What about the 10% coupon? How can I get that to take 10% of all items in my cart? The coupon applies to the items BTW

well, I guess it doesnt matter if I stack...as long as I can find a 100$ filler.
Dell does not sell UV filters do they?
I would be looking for one for a 50mm 1.5 prime, and a 100-400L zoom

The 10% and $90 are stackable. I have the Rebel XT in my cart right now with both discounts showing. SO tempted to buy a Rebel XT for myself as a backup and a super light walkabout camera. Plus having an XT in my bag would add very little weight and it would be great to have the 17-40/4L or 28-75/2.8 on the XT and the 70-200/4L on the 10D at all times.

Trying to convince myself I "need" this. I'm a sucker for a nice discounts.

I swear being a crackhead would be a cheaper hobby.

I posted all the coupon codes this morning here:
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=66692

They are definitely stackable, but limited on how many times you can use them, so once there are too many uses (usually 2,000) they stop working. I just tried them again though and they still seem to stack.

AMEX is the only credit card that doubles / extends the warranty right? Are there any others? Does this apply to Canadian AMEX cards? If I buy from the states with a Canadian AMEX, will the warranty still double?

ITS HAPPENING!
IM GOING TO BE THE PROUD FATHER OF A rebel XT soon!
I am just about the order...I have the money..but have to decide on the lens
I dont really want to go with the kit lens, cause its crap...
My first choice is the 100-400L..with something short..like a 50 (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?TabPage=overview&sku=A0405621&spagenum=&category_id=6096&brandid=31&k=&c=us&l=en&cs=19&mnf=&prst=&prEnd=&mnfsku=&orderby=&searchtype=&pageb4search=&page=productlisting.aspx&instock=&refurbished=)

BUt then I got to thinking about a 17-40...and something else..but I want a long zoom...and a 100-400L on top of that would put me just ouch of reach...
What should I do?

urgent help needed by the way..I hope to order this today and get it shipped out today..and use the coupons before they go out...

If you can't get all three, why not get the XT with the kit lens to hold you over, and the 100-400L? The kits lens really isn't as bad as many people make it out to be. It's no 17-40L, but it did well by me while I needed it.

BTW, the kit lens can be had for $75 new or barely used pretty easily from either ebay or FM Buy/Sell forum.

hmm..that is another way to go to!
I really didnt want to go that way though...but look like it may be the route to go.
I could go for the 50 prime though...which setup would be worth more?
rebel xt of course
1: kit lens + 100 - 400
2: 50 prime + 100 - 400

I kinda of think 2 is better...but would 1 be just as good? I have no glass coming into thise remember

edit: also, remember that the rebel XT is 95% just a temp solution for me. Gonna give it to my mom when I can afford a better camera / waiting for the next generation.

#2 is definitely better quality wise, but 50mm on a Rebel XT is like 80mm equivalent.

How about 1+2? That's still only about $150 more than the XT + 100-400, and at least you'll have something to hold you over that is somewhat wide.

Or, you could just do #2 now, and see if the 50mm is wide enough for you, then pick up a kit lens for $75 new or barely used.

Like I mentioned.. it was the 17-40L or the XT... If I keep the XT, I have to wait 2-4 months for the cash for a 17-40L or 10-22.

And I question your literacy. Re-read my post, or better yet, have your mommy help you read it. Just to repeat: I went to their site and there was no mention of a sale. That's why I called.

I just looked at their site, and their prices didn't seem like any real bargain to me. The lens I want, the 17-40mm L, was $799.00. I believe B&H has it for around $679.00. I also could find no reference to any sale, coupon, rebate, or anything else that meant I would save money.

I'm pretty impressed with my Dell computer but, when I decide to buy a lens, I really think I'd rather buy it elsewhere...

I had enough coupons to bring the 17-40L to $629.00 with no tax from Dell... I guess it depends on where you look. Like I mentioned before, I got the XT for $726, shipped, no tax. Do you know of a retailer who sells it for less?
