I want to purchase my first set of ND/GND filters. I currently have only 2 lenses the canon 28-135 kit lens and the canon 10-22. Is there an adaptor ring and or holder that will work for both of these lenses? and if so which one? I know the cokin P series holder states all lenses up to 82mm wide. I just want to make sure i am buying the right thing.

For Grad ND I'd go with the Cokin P series. Just buy one adapter ring for the 10-22 (77mm?) and one for the 28-135 (don't know size). The rings are cheap and will allow you to mount the filter holder on either lens.

But since you're using it on a 10-22 I'd suggest getting the Cokin P-series Wide Angle filter holder. The wide angle holder lets you mount only one filter at a time, but won't cause vignetting, unlike a regular holder.

What country are you in?

Do a bit of research into Hi-Tech filters before plunging into Cokin.

I'm in the U.S.

I will sheck tohe out (Hi-Tech)

So will I have to buy both the wide angle holder for the 10-22 and the standard P series holder as well along with the 72 & 77mm ring adapters?

The Wide Angle holder can be used on "normal" lenses as well. You will need an adapter ring for each lens diameter; you may find it as cheap or cheaper to buy a filter/ring kit in each size rather than one kit and a separate adapter if you go the Cokin P holder route.

can the hitech GND filters (hard) be used as a ND?

are they at a size where the gradient part can just be used to completely cover the lens and act as an ND?

Maybe on a P&S camera but most DSLR lenses are wider than the shaded portion.

even a kit 18-55 lens?

I thought the filter size was 4 x 5 "

So the shaded portion is maybe 2.5", and since it's forward of the lens, you'll be accepting light from outside tha filter area. Think of it as "reverse vignetting".

2.5" covers my kit lens

I can just crop the vignetted areas :)
