Posting this largely for comments on "what I might have done." Most of the day we had almost total cloud cover, so I made no preparations for this. At just about the time the eclipse started, the clouds cleared. I grabbed what I could find and took a few shots. An obvious improvement would have been to find a better location, but . . .
As everyone knows, it is not only dangerous but virtually impossible to look into the sun and see anything. I sort of pointed the camera in the general direction and took some meter measurements, then quickly peeked into the viewfinder and shot away. Here's what I got. Some cropping and small curve ajustments in PSE 3.
Given this try as a starting point, what more might I have done?

Hi Jim

Though I have no idea of shooting eclipses but you could have


straightaway underexposed and bracketed exposures
tried a longer lense
focussed at infinity (the point of interest in not in focus or is it due to clouds?)ciao
