Conversion Help

Hello everyone, I am new to this site, so please...be gentle lol...

I am shooting with a Cannon HG20 Hi Def handheld and am having trouble finding out what I need to do to convert the video files to something that is easier to manage and edit with basic editing software.

The file extentions are .m2ts and I would like to be able to convert them a to .mpg, .wmv, or similar extention.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

The format is not very friendly so must be converted. I've been looking into getting a new 'home' HiDef camera to replace my Canon ZR20 MiniDV, and have found still recording to tape is the way to go.

I have used both AVS and Handbrake...will have to say by a slim margin prefer handbrake.
