Hi all! So I am looking to buy my next DSLR

I started with a 350d, 50mm 1.4, etc.

Sold it all, since I am now deployed and thought I would be quitting the hobby; Decided I should not give up such a great hobby, and am going to get back into it.

I mostly shoot fashion/models. Sometimes shoot cars, I love to work outdoors, and sometimes in low light.

My first lens will be 24-70L & 50 1.4.

I can't for the life of me decide what camera to get. I have choices narrowed down to 40D, 50D, or used 5D.

I only have $1200-$1300 to spend at first.

Most people will probably say 5D, it's full frame, etc. But for my type of shooting why is the 5D worth an extra $400-$500?

Please enlighten me

Regards

Jesse

Actually, I would say that a 5D does not give a huge advantage to this type of shooting. Yes, it will have a smaller depth of field, which is nice in some ways, and it also is better in low light. But overall, you would probably be better served by getting a 40D or 50D and spending some money on lighting instead.

I would also consider the 17-55 f/2.8 and the 85 f/1.8. The 85 has much nicer bokeh than the 50mm and it's longer focal length is better suited for this type of photography.

Yay a reply :)

This is the exact kind of advice I was needing.

Hopefully others will put in more advice. Do you think the 24-70 2.8 is a good first lens though?

Thanks

The 40D will be a nice step up from what you're used to. Go with that and put the money you save into glass/speedlites. The 24-70 L is a nice piece of glass. Can't see how you'd go wrong there for the stuff you want to shoot.

I mostly shoot fashion too. The 5D is beautiful. I use it far more than I use my 1D Mark III and I wouldn't give it up for anything. With your lenses I think it's a great choice. The 5D sounds perfect for what you want to do, and the camera itself is approaching legendary status.

Well I'm gonna order the 40d. Once my order goes thru at Adorama...
