I would agree on shots where people are like heckling the bum and agrivating him, but I donno I think this looks kinda interesting and I hid out with the 70-200 as to not bother him, plus there's no face. As for keeping things upbeat Im totaly for upbeat shots but isn't photography about all kinds of emotions. Cheers Jay.

How about not looking at threads that may hit to have content you don't want to see? I thought about sticking it in the urban section but didnt' because this section says "candids" I can see why you want to try and focus on the positives in life, cause it seems your stuck in a negitive rutt. Speak your mind but don't tell me what to do. :) Goodluck

for a minute there, I thought I was in a twilight zone and seeing only one end of a conversation, since your posts are the only ones in the thread

It's a really nice shot, I think. It looks like you were calm and didn't rush it, which is good, since your comment about it being your first and feeling weird would suggest otherwise. I would like to get some shots of the bums around campus, but some of them can be rather irritable and verbal- not sure how they con people out of money with the attitudes they have

I think it's a great shot (nice job), but I would have personally captioned it a bit differently. This could very well be some old guy just trying to pad his low-retirement income. Food for thought.

I just felt weird because I didn't want to be seen and make the person feel self conscious.

I now see the thread name was wrong as in the same regards to calling a challenged person a Tard or such.

Messege from a conserned member - "the reason i said that in my post is that i think it is sad that you are using a 1000 camera to take a picture of a guy collecting cans so he can eat for the night. your other pics are much better. the reason you felt weird is because i am sure your parents raised you to respect those less fortunate than you. i removed my posts. you are entitled to post whatever you wish, i just hope you respect other people in life. cheers."

My responce- Except for the fact that it felt like you were trying to tell me where I should post and such, I respect your posts and think they should have been left up. I think what tipped you off was my name for the thread. "Scrumbum" it's true it's a dissrespectfull name. But it sounded catchy and I wanted people to take a look. Other then that I think it's just showing the hard side of life no tormenting or poking fun " oh look at him haha" intended.

It seems people only post comments on the pics that Im not that happy about and then nothing on the shots I like, don't make me resort to trickory with the thread names!

that would explain my feeling of being lost coming into this thread... some posts were removed.

I have to say, though, there are plenty of photo journalists that take there $4000+ cameras to remote countries just to photograph the hardships those people go through. Do they offer them aid? Maybe, but I doubt that even if they do, it's enough to significantly alter their living situations. Also, while I realize it's probably morally wrong to look down on people for being homeless, etc, I know plenty of the "bums" in my area indeed have quite a bit of money, but are just too lazy to get a job (I've talked to a couple of them). Why work and pay taxes when people will give them money for nothing?

Photographs like this help point out the reality of how ours lives are, and that everyone isn't living a great and wonderful life.

Today I encountered a streetperson begging for food.

The scenerio went like this.

I was sitting in a pizza place in downtown Vancouver. I saw this person buy this streetperson a slice of pizza. A moment later this streetperson had eaten the pizza (except the crust) and proceeded to throw the crust away. Later as I left to get on my way. This streetperson says to me "buy me a slice of pizza?". I looked at this person and said "I just saw you throw half a slice away." He replied "That was the crust!"

I told this person. Beggers can't be choosers. Then I walked away from this person.

Where did you take this picture?
Vancouver City Police Station at China Town?

Ya I think about that sometimes while watching tv, they are jabbing their long lenses in peoples faces when some of their loved ones have just died it's pretty harsh.

I don't have any problems with the dude in the shot. He's getting some bottles to make some bones, I did it as a kid too. As for downtown beggers? I am inraged by them. Right now I use a wheelchair to get around and am getting used to that before I decide to get a job, but even I am gona return to work. Bums have the nerve to come up to me, a kid and be really snotty beggers. It makes me so mad as I would do anything just to be able to go back to my old job.

No in a North Van residential area, they just opened a shelter over here and there are lots of reports of downtown police picking homless people up and dropping em over here, I think its part of trying to push people away from the gas town area so it looks good for the olympics in a few years. ANYWAYS I didn't want this to turn into a hate on the homless thread, so only post up if you have somethin to say about the shot. One of the reasons the other guy I started arguing with about this took his posts off was because he didnt want to talk politics just photos. CHEERS EVERYONE

BTW

Nice capture, you always seem to have an eye for a good shot. That is something I have yet to learn. I'm just click happy.

As sincere as you sound and maybe had good intentions its not really proper to call anyone a bum.

Even if they are?

bum
1. A tramp; a vagrant.
2. A lazy or shiftless person, especially one who seeks to live solely by the support of others.
3. An incompetent, insignificant, or obnoxious person: The batter called the pitcher a bum.
4. One who is devoted to a particular activity or milieu: a beach bum.

I don't care for the shot. Not gritty enough to convey what I would expect was the true picture of a person really down and out. It's too bright and cheery looking (light wise).

And to me, your expression of feeling wierd indicates you didn't want to hurt feelings which is great. But this is life.

Yes. He did. There were several others...
