I noticed a post in the critique section of a 15 second exposure of a watch in which the second had was blurred. Easy enough to understand and I thought it was cool. But the camera was a P&S only capable of 15 second exposure and I was wondering what would happen with a 30 second exposure so I set up real quick and tried. This is what I got. For reference I did a 15 second exposure without the sweep second hand running - easy to see and I also see it needs to be adjusted a bit. The bottom gold dial in the photo is the normal second hand dial - with no dial showing. So I fired off the 30 second exposure with the sweep second hand running and it disappeared too. I would have thought it would be at least a blur. Maybe I'll try some different watches.....
I know, I've got to get a life...

send it in for warranty, the second hand isn't suposed to dissapear like that, continued use may cause damage, missing of apointments and or death.

I have tried the same shots on a Rolex with various exposure times...I found that the 5-10 second exposure works best..

How about hitting a flash every other second, or 15 seconds? would you get two or n number of second hands?

Isn't there a strobing mode on flashes?

Not sure the flash would work unless you could somehow compensate for the rest of the image. I believe the problem is that the second hand does not reflect enough light in one spot to allow it to be recorded. I've tried another with a different watch. The second hand on the Rolex (sorry, not as clear as Vega$50) has a large circle on it that traces as a gray blur in the image from 10 to until 20 after. It's a 30 second exposure at f8.0 using ISO 100 and room light (daylight flourescent).
