View Full Version : Just given up on 60D

Without wanting to get into a debate about the merits of the 50D, I felt that the 15MP was too much for a 1.6 crop sensor in respect to high ISO performance. I liked the big LCD screen and the microadjustment but I was prepared to wait for the 60D in the hope that Canon would see sense and knock the resolution down to a more sensible 12-13MP.
The launch yesterday of the 500D killed off any hope of that. Canon won't launch the 60D with less than 15MP and I can't see how they can improve the high ISO performance with a 15MP sensor. Also, I would imagine that the 60D will follow the trend for incorporating a HD video capability..... something that doesn't interest me.
So given that I don't want to sell up all my gear and move to Nikon, it looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and settle for the 50D.......... unless of course I come into some money and can afford a lovely 5D mk II

ditto...... pick up a 40D at a great price and you will not loose your hiney when you eventually want to upgrade to the next release.

I wouldn't rule it out but where I am the price difference between the 40D and 50D isn't huge and I would like the microadjustment feature and the improved LCD of the 50D.

got myself a 50d today for mostly the same reasons, microadjustment is new to me, but the lcd is very usable compared to my 1d and 10d..........all i need do now is find a duck to photograph...........i also found the price difference not worth worrying about, but i am looking forward to testing the high iso performance at basketball this weekend.

If Canon would sell a firmware upgrade to the 40D to add microadjust and multiple levels of in camera noise reduction, they'd have a real moneymaker there.

have to agree the micro adjustment seems a real asset, ive yet to play with the noise reduction.
perhaps bsmostril you could advise as a 50d owner, how much you use this rather than pc adjusted post capture, is it reliable without too much loss of detail ?

Active cooling. Drop the sensor temp to -30 or so and the noise just melts away. :)
As to the noise reduction, It works, but so does Noise Ninja. I have found that the noise on the 50 is no worse than the 40 and seems to clean up easier. ISO 1600 and 3200 are very usable with little noise reduction needed. ISO 6400 and 12600 not so much so.

Wait until the next 1D series camera comes out, which SHOULD lower the price of the 1D Mark III, and get a Mark III. The high ISO of the 1D Mark III is incredible!

there is always room for improvement, especially in high ISO performance and increasing DR.
i have no qualms with shooting with a 6MP sensor and honestly think this MP race needs to come to an end.

Nevar!
I'm counting on Canon to break the 30 MP barrier with its 1Ds Mark IV, because NIKON and SONY have toppled Canon's title for "most megapixels ever" with their D3X and A900...and CANON cannot let THAT happen...it's time to strike back! Go, Canon! :)

while i do know that the demeanor of your response was agreeable in underlying tone, i also agree that this, unfortunately, will probably be the mentality had in the approach to upcoming models produced by Canon.

1st... Nothing has been said that the 60D will be a 1.6 crop, 2nd... I wouldn't be suprised if they made it 18mp and the noise handling was as good as the 5D mkII, technology is always developing so don't dought the camera till the specs have been released and reviews.

Doubt.

The 60D will continue the 1.6 crop. It will be 15.1 MP. It will have HD video. It will have 13 AF points 9+4 assist. It will have Digic V, what ever that is over DigicIV. It may have full weather sealing, I hope it does as I would buy it for this alone. It may have 98% viewfinder, I wish it was 100%.
That is all my crystal ball will show me for now. :) Your crystal ball may vary. ;)

My crystal ball tells me the 60D will have the ability to turn into a coffee mug heater if it is turned on its LCD and its lens is removed. The mirror flips back and reveals a tiny electrode circuitry board which you rest a part of you mug on; allowing it to receive heat from the camera.
Everyone will want one.

In the MP conversation, I often wonder how closely one can draw comparisons from chip manufacturers.
In designing the main CPU's for your computers, the designers seemed to reach a point of diminishing returns for the technology available. Rather than focus on making a 5ghz main CPU (with hurdles such as heat and power consumption), they branched into multi-cores, graphics cpu's, etc.
Hence today, CPU speeds have not dramatically increased from what was available 2-3 years ago, but a 2009 model has drastically greater performance than a 2006 model
Do you (those more informed than me) think Camera Sensors will hit a similar wall? If so, how far from that wall are we...or have they hit it, and just not admitted it to themselves yet?

I think we hit that wall with the 20D/XT. There have been improvements with each model, but if you look at the image quality the improvements have been small. Most improvements are with the feature set.

If the D60 is 18 or 20mp why not just shoot in sRAW? (Your) problem solved!
My computer is likeing my "new" 30D more than my XTi

Well the 50D was realeased almost a year from the 40D, prior to that it was 18months. I don't think it will be 18months, because they have the technology it's just a matter of putting it together as a package. Maybe fall of 09?
