I think there is supposed to be a backlight on the top display (not the rear display), but I sure can't get it to turn on, according to the book. There is nothing selected in the menu preventing it. Any ideas?

When I got my D60, I believed that the back illumination wasn't working; I hadn't remembered - from the manual - that you press the 'set' button to activate the illumination!
Of course, the LCD panel illumination must be enabled in the menu for the 'set' button to achieve this. :)

Excellent! Thanks.
I was trying to activate it with the shutter release button or the front dial, not the rear dial's set button. I'll have to RTFM more closely.
