I had 2 out of 3 Samsung 226CW monitors die, the backlight stops working whenever you turn the monitor off at night and on in the morning or you let the monitor go to sleep. Eventually it comes back on but it takes a good 5-10 minutes to fiddle with it.

I am going to just buy some new monitors rather than wait for the replacement.

I read a previous thread about monitors, what is IPS and TN they are referring to? It seems like IPS is better for color, but I am not sure what they are. Can you easily tell what type a monitor is, do they list this feature?

I'm considering a single 30" over 2 22" widescreens or I may pick up 2 24" screens. I have always been a fan of Samsung, but 2 out of 3 are having the same problem, I don't think I want another Samsung.

IPS panels are better for color work. You can tell easily if a panel is IPS as it will have a 178 degree viewing angle.

Dell introduced a 22" e-IPS panel that people are loving right now due to the price and quality. You can see the thread here: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=634520

If you decide to go with 2-24" or a 30" then check out the usual suspects like Dell, Apple, NEC, Eizo, Lacie, etc.

How can you tell from the specs online/in store if it is IPS or not?

What about LED monitors like the VLED221wm?

Not sure if I can get by with a single 30", I probably could with software to help run two apps side by side, I think dual 22 or 24's is ideal. I'll check out that dell one, I know dell has some good monitors despite me hating their pc's.

I would like to get a res jump on 1680x1050, I wanted 1900 but it was hard enough to find 1680x at the time of picking up the samsungs (feb/2008) as most widescreens were 1400x.

Again, it will have a 178 degree viewing angle. This is part of the specs.

I am not familiar with LED monitors, by my first thought is that they are likely going to be expensive since they are new. Check out reviews before you buy.

If you want more than 1680x1050 then you need to go with 24s or larger.

My work stations consist of Mac G5 2.5 running two 21 Dell monitors side by side, and a Mac Pro running Apples 30" and a smaller 17 inch. I can say that the 30 by itself easily replaces the 2 dell 21" monitors. You get so much more space width wise and height wise as well. I run a 22" and a 19" at home side by side and would still take this 30" monitor over both of those as well.

Now two 30's I wouldnt know what to do with.

Those 21" monitors widescreen?
Are there 30" IPS based monitors?

How much real estate would you have with 1 30" compared to 2x 22 Wide screens at 1680x1050?
