View Full Version : Error 99 on my new 1D Mark II

Well, I am more than a little disappointed. I have had my 1D mark II for about 2 weeks and I have used it quite a bit with every lens I own without any problems, until today. Today I was doing bridal portraits on location and after 37 shots with my 24-70 L I got Error 99. I powered down, removed the CF card, pulled the battery waited a moment, reinserted the battery and powered back up, same thing - Error 99. I switched lenses to my 85 1.8, still Error 99. So I pulled out my trusty 10D and kept shooting (I love my 10D)
I have tried everything I can think of and no matter what I do I get error 99.
I have the latest firmware 1.2.1
Any ideas? I can't believe my old 10D is more reliable than my new 1d Mark II. This sux.

Sounds like a real mechanical failure,. you have done all the "ricks" that usually work when it is just a firmware glitch...
But of the shutter is actually stuck or some other such thing... it's back to Canon :(

When I press the shutter button, I get error 99. When I power the camera off and back on the shutter fires. and camera is okay until I press the shutter button again.

Did you use all your other lenses with the camera?
I got the same thing on a camera and found it was a problem with the lense. 99 code

No one has mentioned it yet, so I will:
Remove ALL batteries from the camera for at least 10 minutes. That includes the internal battery. That's basically a COMPLETE reset of your camera that I don't think you have done yet from what I have read in this thread.
CDS: What is a "rick" ?

yes, my letter to Canon well be rather heated
I mean I have put my 10D through hell and it is not a "Professional body" and it continues to perform flawlessly. So what do I do? blow $4000.00 on a Pro Body that lasts me exactly 9 days.
I am pissed, but whats a guy to do?

Not sure where you bought the 1D MKII, but at 9 days, I would return it to the dealer for an over-the-counter exchange.
Has any other 1D MKII owners experienced this?

Good point. Where was this camera bought?
And no, since the release of the MKII there have been no issues at all with build quality. A few software quirks here and there, but that's normal for any computer.

Well, I can't walk in and do an over the counter exchange because I had to order the body. I live in a small town with 1 camera shop and they don't stock any high end stuff at all and what they order for you is at or above MSRP. I did send an email to the dealer I ordered from and I will follow up with a phone call on Monday. Until then I'm just using my trusty 10D

This is so upsetting to me! I just got the 20D and have used it ONCE...was testing with my flash last night and got err99...i had the D30 for years and had no problem. I even felt that when i bought this camera, it didn't seem as sturdy but since there were so many rave reviews, i felt it was a must have. Is this camera a lemon?? Great, i'm on my way to shoot an event...and i feel very insecure having this camera now....arg!

That's fine, but they should still cover it since it's so new. They should be able to order you a replacement camera from Canon and then return the funky one directly to them without you having to deal with all that.

I agree with Jim. The dealer should exchange the camera. They may not pay for return shipping, but 4K is a lot of money to pay for a "repaired" camera.
I went to your original thread to see if you mentioned where you purchased it, but didn't see where. Was it B&H? If so, I suspect they would have no objections at all about an exchange.
Where did you buy it?

It was a local (sort of) dealer, about 2 hours from where I live. I have delt with them in the past on L lenses, etc...
they are not open today, but that will be my first phone call in the morning. I think I may take a road trip ;-)

I too have the 1D MKII. I too have the err 99 problem. I read somewhere it had to do with 2GB Lexar cards and the older 1D firmware. I have updated my firmware and shoot with 4GB cards and still have the problem.. It rears its' ugly head with various lenses. It has once cost me to lose an important image sequence (camera was buffering and writing the burst sequence to card and the err99 popped up and locked the camera up before all the images were written to card). It frustrates me and I worry about it when I am shooting. I just sold my 10D so at the moment I do not have a backup..
For me, turning the camera off and popping out the battery usually 'fixes' it. Last night I had it happen twice in a row. My camera is 3 months old and has about 8000 shots on it. Please let us know what the outcome is.

Well, I just got off the phone with the dealer and he has agreed to exchange the camera for me :-)
The only catch is he only has the display model in stock, but he is expecting another one by the end of the week. So, I will pack everything up, ship it to him and wait.
I edited those bridal shots yesterday and I must say that before the camera died it was taking some nice shots. I was shooting on ISO 50 (first time) and the images really are incredible. When I compare them to shots taken with the 10D, the 1D Mk II really blows it away.
Now the waiting begins...

I bought my mk2 just before xmas and after a couple of days I started getting err99's in a typically unpredictable way except that the camera wouldn't work below about 10degrees
Sent the camera back to Canon and they found that the shutter was faulty, replaced it and so far I haven't had any more probs.
There's a very good chance your experience will be same so I wouldn't write of the mk2 yet.

I have the same problem with my 10D but it is only when I use the flash either internal or external.
I get error 99 and it will not reset no matter what I do, But I take off the flash and it works fine. I can't figure it out.

I am assuming we'll figure out how to get rid of it at some point, but even with the intermittent err99, this is a very good camera. Best in it's class by far. It is its' own class! You will not be dissapointed. Spring is breaking here in Holland. I finally got outside and shot a few for fun. Top two are shot with my 1DMKII. Nothing crazy, but when I came home to check my loot, I felt for the first time that I would probably never shoot on Provia again.

As said before in this thread, this camera was a fluke. Read the forums. This is NOT an issue with the MKII.

The wait is worth it. I was one of the first on this forum to order an MKII and then had to wait 30 days while everyone else got theirs as my supplier was not high on Canon's list. The only consolation was that I also paid $400 less than everyone else. ;)
So yes, the wait is worth it.

I know the wait is worth it, that is what makes it so hard. Remember I had a 1D MkII for 9 whole days before it had fatal error 99 and died. So I know first hand the joy of holding such a camera and that makes it all the more difficult ;)

I think that describes how I felt when it just died a few shots into a bridal portrait session. I grabbed my 10d and kept shooting but in the back of mind I wanted to tell the bride to "wait just a few minutes while I check on my new camera that just bit the dust". But I managed to make it through the rest of the shoot and then I drove home really fast and called Canon.

I am charging the battery now, I can't wait to fire it up. If I get another error 99 I will shoot myself (not with the camera). I also got my new 70-200 2.8 L IS, It like Christmas here.

 I just got my 1D MKII today and right out of the box error 99. Pissed I tell you!!! I contacted canon's tech support and they had me take off the lens and take out the AC battery. I put the AC back in and left the lens off. It still did not work and the tech said it was an internal problem to either send it in to canon or return to the dealer. I am calling the dealer ASAP for an exchange with overnight shipping paid at their expense. I purchased it originally from Unique Photo.
The error 99 seems to be a catch all error and it means MANY different things. I have also gotten it on my 1ds, but after taking the battery out and back in , it has always worked fine.

I had the same problem with my mk2 purchased here in Norway around the turn of the year.
The problem was with the shutter -- since Canon replaced it the mk2 has been totally reliable doing what it is supposed to do all day every day.
Perhaps significantly a friend of mine bought a mk2 from the same supplier at the same time that developed the same fault.
We speculated that there may have been a batch of mk2's sent out with faulty shutters.
This report and others I have read on the net would tend to confirm this although I have never heard of Canon saying a word on the subject.

So far my replacement has worked without a hitch, I have a wedding to shoot tomorrow - I am keeping my finger crossed. The 10D will be waiting in the wings if the 1D MkII dies.
The bottom line is we should not be having this conversation about a $4000.00 camera :-(
