I found a great observation point today at Washington Dulles International Airport. It is from the upper deck of one of the two parking decks. I don't know what they call it, but it is the deck more to the west. It directly overlooks runway 1L/19R. I took this with my DRed and 70-200 2.8L. ISO 100 F11 1/320 @200mm. The lens is a little short for the distance but the 747 is so big it didn't matter for this shot. Hope you like it.....

Carzy about avaiton and pics. My other hobby is flying 1/4 scale remote control wwII warbirds. Love the 747 and think you got a nice capture here.

Nice shot.
My mom works for United. She's a flight attendant.
Dante, what planes do you have? I'm in love with the Me-109G6 A/S :D

Hey my main model is a 1/4 scale me-109G, Scale model. Markings replicate those of a major flown out of greece in early 40s. Uses a 75CC Motor. Fully functional controls, flaps, gear, center line stores etc. Love it. Best toy EVER, well , yes even over the camera. Sadly I put the gear thru the wings on a deadstick (dead motor) landing on my last outing. Should not have dropped gear. Was not to high and had to dive for the deck to keep lift. Managed to get it over the runway, but lost to much airspeed and waffled from about 2.5 feet. Oh hell.

Good fun! what ever floats your boat as long as you are flying. Electric just does not do it for me. I am addicted to the growl of a gas burning motor, not to mention the wonderful perfume it puts off. Nothing like climing straight up out of sight on full throttle.

I always wanted to fly R/C so I bought a .40 trainer. Then I realized for about the same money I would dump into flying R/C I could get my pilots license. So I now I fly real airplanes.....:p

Have you got any shots there Tom?
John: I see you say it's 1L and 19R, which means the runway is close to straight North/South. Maybe try and return at the other time of day, morning or afternoon, whenever this shot wasn't done, so you have the sun on its side. Cool shot anyway. :)
I can only get rotating shots on rare occassions. Only when our 05 runway is active, and that only happens 1/10 times or less. So the chances of being there, on a weekend, when 05 is open, and I have time free, is close to nil. :(

You know what, I don't think so but I wouldn't swear to that. I have posted some aviation photos but I don't think to this site.

You are right about the light. I was actually just out scouting locations, and when I saw this guy coming I had to shoot him. Now that I know I have a great vantage point, I will go back at a time when the light is better and the landing pattern is right.

Actually, this was taken just before touchdown, not at rotation.
Thanks for looking.
