I am very new to the studio setting. I do not know what to buy. I have a canon 50D and 580ExII flash. I have bought a backdrop. I do not know if I need continuous light or flash. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also where is the cheapest place to get lighting?

I would suggest a set of wireless triggers, a couple of stands, a shoot thru umbrella and a reflector for fill light. You will then have the basics. If you have not checked out strobist.com, you should read, read, read.

Also, a general budget would help. $500, $1000? $250?

Get flash. Please see this quick intro to choosing studio lighting (http://www.photolearn.co.uk/free_pdf/How%20to%20choose%20your%20studio%20lights.pdf)

I picked up an Interfit EX150 Home Studio Lighting kit last summer for, I believe, under $300. It's basic, build quality is modest, but it's a good kit for beginners.

I got (2) 150ws heads, 2 light stands, and shoot thru umbrella, a 24x24 softbox, 2 8 inch reflectors, and a couple modifiers I'm not sure of - they're black.

As has been mentioned, people do very nice, interesting stuff with Canon Speedlites off camera.
