great shots. the first one though i think the dad looks kinda angry rather than thoughtful, and the shot seems slightly out of focus, but i love the lighting. Try and get your husband to "smile" with his eyes. sounds stupid, but it really does work. it'll soften his look a bit. i hate to pick the pic apart as it really is a keeper, just some suggestions. great work!

ooh i know what it is, its the size of his pupils. i just read somewhere that if you make your subjects look into a light prior to snapping the pic, it'll widen the pupil which gives a softer feel. look at his eyes (narrow pupil) compared to your son's (wider pupil) and youll see what i mean. also, have them focus on a far object, for some reason that helps too. and btw, trying to keep all of this together and get the exposure, lighting and focus at the same time is very tough, but when you get it all nailed down (i havent yet) you'll be that much mor eimpressed with your shots or so im told. lol . :D
